Barrel Racing History
- When barrel racing first got its start, speed wasn’t the most important thing, the riders outfit and horsemanship was the thing being scored
- The barrel racing course would alternate between a figure eight and a cloverleaf pattern
- The first barrel race was held in Texas
- The first barrel is the most important - it is referred to as the “money barrel” because it is crucial to the ride’s overall run

Breakaway Roping
A rope is attached to the calf’s neck, the calf is released when the barrier(door) is open. The rider is to throw the lasso around the caves neck.
When the calf hits the end of the rope, the rope is pulled tight and the string breaks
In Europe this is used as a substitute event for calf roping
When it breaks that is the end of the run
Usually seen in junior high, high school, collage, and semi professional rodeos
Some rodeos also have breakaway roping as a part of their line-up
