RISING ACTION

Event #1:The English teacher gave the students five week's to work on the assignment but Walter procrastinated. Then, 5 days before the assignment was due he started working on it.

Event #2:Walter was trying to finish the short story but he was stuck. So he decided to find a magazine and plagiarize a story in it.

Event #3: He gets to school thinking if he should hand the assignment to the teacher or not. Finally he decided to hand it in.

CLIMAX

MIDDLE

The climax of the story is when Walter's English teacher is beginning to read the story that Walter plagiarized.

  • Where the story goes from Walter questioning his decisions to being stuck making the wrong decision
  • He's sitting there knowing that his grade can't take this and that he cannot change the wrong decision he made

"' Well, Walter, isn't yours completed? Your grade can't take that.'" (Mann, 294)

CONFLICT

The conflict is internal because Walter has to decide if he should hand in the assignment or not. In the text it says, "How can I possibly turn this in as my own work? The decision is weighing heavily upon my mind."(Mann,294) (Human vs Self)

Protagonist vs. Antagonist

PROTAGONIST VS. ANTAGONIST

The protagonist of the story is obviously Walter. The antagonist of the story is Walter's English teacher but the true antagonist is assignment because:

It reveals that he's an avid procrastinator

-"Of course I had stayed up rather, well, very late the previous night because of a history report I handed in yesterday, a day late." (Mann, 293)

It is the production of Walter's conflict between himself (whether or not he should hand in plagiarized work)

But Walter's teacher is the antagonist because he assigned the assignment

FALLING ACTION

There is minimal to non falling action or resolution in the story because the story end's right after the climax happens. So, we predict that Walter will get caught for plagiarizing and he will fail the assignment and his course.

END

THEME

The theme or message of this story is that even in a stressful situation you should never lie and take the easy way out, because it will always come back to haunt you. The mood or overall feeling of this story is stressed. One example of the mood being very stressed is when Walter was contemplating handing in his plagiarized assignment, "How can I possibly turn this in as my own work? The decision is weighing heavily upon my mind. I begin my journey through the endless corridors of the school." (Mann, 294) The feeling of stress increased greatly during the climax, when Walter's teacher began to read the story that he had handed in as his own.
