The Genovese Crime Family

By Bryanna Barker

Who Is The Genovese Crime Family?

Who?

Good Question!

  • The genovese crime family is one of the "Five families" of organized crime in america
  • Established by Charles "lucky" luciano in the 1930s
  • Originated in Italy
  • It was and still is the most powerful and diverse crime family in american mafia

Charles "Lucky" Luciano

Vito Genovese

Why this family?

I asked the same question when I was searching for a family to research, that is one of the reaons I chose this family. I find crime "families" very interesting in their rise to power and their reasonings behind joining the life of crime. I have learned about many different crime families but for this mafia family to be so notorious I am shocked I have not heard more, or anything at all for that matter. .

As I did more research on the Genovese Crime Family, I realized that the time period they began in and the events around it could be a huge reason why they were as successful as they were. I began to realize that maybe one of the reasons crime families like the Genovese family grew to be so powerful was because they were formed during the Great Depression which brought violence and the need for a new source of income and sense of meaning (they found their meaning in power and fear), not to mention being born in Italy and moving to America which could also play a role in how events played out.

The Beginning

The family was established in the 1930s by a man by the name of Charles "Lucky" Luciano ( The American Godfather of the mob). As Lucky Luciano rose to the top, so did his litereal partner in Vito Genovese. After a couple of years, the family was taken over by Vito which is where it got the name Genovese Family.

Five

Families

The Five Families shaped the the New York Mafia into who they are today. The Five Families were organized by Salvatore Maranzano after his victory in the Castellammarese War.

In the 1920s, the Mafria in the US was controlled by Guiseppe "Joe The Boss" Masseria. In the beginning of the 30s, one of Masseria's associated decided to take him out (Lucky Luciano) and took over the business. After Masseria died, Maranzano reoganized the Italian American gangs in New York into the Five Families.

The Five Families formed a Commission. The Commission held the power of approving a new boss befre he could officialy take over a family. The Commission played a huge role in trying to keep rivalries at an arms length between the families.

There's A Netflix Show About The Five Families in the 70s.
