Introduction

Over many years more and more buildings have been constructed allowing the A&T's campus to grow and expand. Each building that is apart of the university serves a purpose, which means each building is important to the school. Many of the buildings developed their names over time some of which are named after important people from Aggie history.

Building Phase One: 1890's Crosby Years

  • The First three buildings came about during John Crosby presidency.
  • John Oliver Crosby was the first President of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University . He was president of the university from 1892 to 1896

Building Phase One

  • The College Building was the universities first building to be built. This building was completes in 1893.
  • The building was a three story brick building.
  • The Students who would attend the college helped build the building.
  • The building was used for multiple things. Classrooms were located in that building, offices, dormitories, and the school dining service.
  • The Building lasted served the school for a long time before it burned down in 1930
  • The Building was rebuilt, and is now known as the Dudley Building, and it is now used for administrative purposes.

The College Building

  • The Boys dormitory was later named North Dormitory.
  • The Building was fully constructed by 1894.
  • This dormitory could house 130 students across 38 rooms.
  • This building was eventually torn down

The Mechanical Building

  • This Building was constructed in 1895.
  • In 1933 it was renamed Crosby Hall in honor of President John Crosby.
  • Crosby hall had to be rebuilt after being demolished in the 1960's
  • Today the Cosby Hall is where the department of journalism and mass communications is located

Building Phase Two: 1900-1920's Dudley Years

  • James Benson Dudley was President of the University from 1896-1925.
  • There were four different buildings constructed during his time as president.

Building Phase Two

  • The South Dormitory came about in 1900 but was fully completed by 1907.
  • The design of the building was created by a professor, Adam Watson.
  • This building would help house the students attending the college.
  • The building was renamed Old Vanstory Hall.
  • This building no longer exists.

Noble

Hall

  • Noble Hall was constructed in 1922.
  • The building was named after a Chair of the Board of Trustees , Marcus Noble.
  • The nursing program is located in this building.
  • Murphy hall was built in 1923.
  • The building is named after Walter Murphy he was a former legislature of NC.
  • Murphy hall was a dining hall for the campus at one point but it is now used for student affairs.

Morrison Hall

  • It was constructed in 1924.
  • The building was named after the governor at the time, Cameron Morrison.
  • Morrison hall was originally men's dormitory.
  • It is now a women's dormitory.
  • The building was renamed in 2021, its now names Speight Hall.
  • The new name is dedicated to graduate Velma Speight or "Miss Aggie Pride"

Building Phase Three:1930-1950's Bluford Years

  • Dr. Ferdinand Bluford was president of the university for 30 years
  • From 1925-1955
  • He helped the school go from a "D" rating to an "A"
  • Three more important buildings came about during his presidency.

Building Phase Three

  • It was built in 1930.
  • The building was named after James Benson Dudley NCATs second president.
  • This building was build in the same location where the first college building was before it burned down.
  • The H. Clinton Taylor art gallery, and the Mattye Reed African Heritage Center are located in this building.
  • The Building is an administration Building.

Richard B. Harrison Auditorium

  • It was constructed in 1939
  • This building is an auditorium named after Richard Berry Harrison.
  • He was the dramatics department head, he taught drama, and would direct plays.
  • This auditorium can seat about 1000 people, and is used for plays, shows, and other presentations on campus.

Holland Hall

  • Holland Hall was constructed in 1939.
  • The building is named after Annie Wealthy Holland. she was a state supervisor for NC elementary schools.
  • This hall is a dormitory on campus.
  • One of NCATs first buildings named after a woman.

Construction Halted due to WWII

Due to WWII building and construction was halted but there was still 6 more buildings that came about.

  • It was built in 1949.
  • It used to serve as a home for the chancellor and his family.
  • Bluford along with his family was the first to live there.
  • The house was formally renamed to "The Oaks".
  • The name comes from the trees surrounding the house.
  • Today the house is used as the Aggie student V.E.T.S. center

The Presidents House

  • This Hall was built in 1951.
  • it is named after a member of 1899's class, Austin W. Curtis.
  • The hall was originally a women dormitory, then a men dorm.
  • Today it is an all women dormitory again.

Scott Hall

  • Scott hall was built in 1951.
  • It was named after William Scott Kerr a NC Governor
  • The building housed about 1000 male students.
  • This building is no longer standing.
  • It was torn down in the early 2000's, and now the Aggie Villages are located there.

Benbow Hall

  • This building was build in 1953.
  • Named after DeWitt Clinton Benbow who was a physician
  • The department of Human Environment and family sciences is located in this building.

Campbell House

  • It was built in 1955.
  • It was named after Robert Campbell.
  • After WWI he came back to NCAT to manage Murphy Hall.
  • Today it is where ROTC is located.

Moore Gymnasium

  • It was built in 1955
  • The building is named after Charles Henry Moore a founder of the NC Teachers association.
  • They gym had some construction done in 2012.
  • Today it is used for athletics and offices.

Building Phase Four: 1960-1980's Dowdy Years

  • Lewis C. Dowdy became associated with NCAT in 1951 when he began working there.
  • He became President in 1964.
  • In 1972 He then changed over to Chancellor until 1980.
  • During this time 3 more buildings came along.

Crosby Hall

  • The Crosby hall was built and replaced the mechanical building in 1970.
  • More recently in 2005 the building had some reconstructing.
  • This building is where the departments of journalism and mass communication is currently located.

Gibbs Hall

  • This building was built in 1980.
  • The building is named after Warmoth T. Gibbs the universities fourth president.
  • This hall is where the history,criminal justice, and social work departments are located as well as the honors program.
  • This building was built in 1981.
  • It was named after Lewis C. Dowdy.
  • Today The financial aid and registrar offices are located in that building. Along with other administrative offices.

Building Phase Five: 1980-1990's Fort Years

  • Dr. Edward Fort was the chancellor from 1981 to 1999
  • During his time the university started 30 new programs and the first Ph.D for mechanical and electrical engineering
  • There was $50 million of construction completed and $30 million in renovations

Building Phase Five

Webb Hall

  • It was constructed in 1982.
  • It is named after one of the former deans, Burleigh Carlyle Webb.
  • Today it is a laboratory and research center for animal science.

McNair Hall

  • It was built in 1987. It is named after Ronald E. McNair, who died during the launch of a space shuttle in 1986.
  • Today this hall is where the engineering program is located.
  • This building was built in 1991.
  • The library is named after former NCAT President Ferdinand Bluford.
  • It serves as the campus library.

Bluford Library

  • This building was built in 1955 but was not complete until 1993.
  • It was named after Chancellor Edward D. Fort.
  • It is used for interdisciplinary research.
  • It was originally Bluford library from 1955 to 1991

Building Phase Six:

2000-2022

Renick & Martin Sr. Years

Building Phase Six

  • James C. Renick was a chancellor at NCAT from 1999-206 (the 9th chancellor)

  • Harold L. Martin Sr. is out current chancellor and has been in his position since 2009.
  • It was fully constructed by 2002.
  • it is located directly in front of the Dowdy Memorial Building
  • It is dedicated to the A&T Four and their movement during the civil rights era.
  • It was brought about by Chancellor Renick.

February One Monument

Proctor Hall

  • It was built in 2008.
  • It got its name from the former NCAT president, Samuel D. Proctor.
  • The building is used for faculty and staff. They were moved into this hall from Hodgin Hall.

Deese Clock Tower

  • It was completed in 2016.
  • It was named after a former chair of board of trustees and NCAT graduate, Willie A. Deese.
  • The clock tower is located at the center of campus.

Blount Student Health Center

  • The building was completed in 2015.
  • It is named after Alvin V. Blount and NCAT Graduate.
  • The health center offers various health services to the campus.
  • It opened In 2021.
  • The farm is used by students, professors, and researches.
  • The facility includes classrooms, labs, auditorium, conference room, and a kitchen.

University Farm Pavilion

  • It opened in 2021
  • It is named after The current chancellor, Chancellor Harold Martin Sr.
  • The building has labs and access to technology used for scientific research and innovation for engineer students.

Engineering research & Innovation Complex

James C. Renick

James C. Renick

  • James Renick was Chancellor from 1999-2006
  • While he held that position the university noticed growth in enrollment and facilities.
  • He was known for the time he spend with students one on one.

Because of how much of an impact he was I do believe there should be a building named after James Renick. I could imagine the student center being named after him because it also has a big impact on students. Many students go to the student center to study or even just chill but ultimately most people go to be around other people. Because of Chancellor Renicks desire to engage with the students and promote growth i think the student center should be named after him
