  • Every RN should maintain attributes of a leader as a professional standard and aspect of identity
  • Nurse leaders build on strengths and look to improve weaknesses
  • Leaders demonstrate time management skills, clear and purposeful communication and are consistently reliable

2. Honesty

  • Patients, peers and self are owed honesty in the nurse's scope of practice
  • The nurse must demonstrate veracity to the patient
  • An honest work environment results in practice that is transparent and open
  • Reporting of errors is consistent and punctual

  • Veracity requires nurses to be truthful, which is important in sculpting an identity as a nurse
  • Truth is "fundamental to building a trusting relationship"
  • Intentionally deceiving or misleading a patient is a violation of this principle, even when it may be ethically difficult to convey the truth

Nurses must perform “effectively within nursing and inter-professional teams, fostering open communication, mutual respect, and shared decision-making to achieve quality patient care.”

Teamwork is critical to best patient outcome, as a nurse and member of the healthcare team! Professionalism requires that nurses integrate into the interdisciplinary team that sees the patient through discharge and beyond.

Professionalism maintains that the job is seen through, even when it is challenging or at first ineffective

  • As an element of professional identity, the nurse should seek to stay relevant with medical knowledge to provide beneficent care for clients

  • As an ethical value, nurse professionals should ensure every patient receives transition of care
  • Not only does the RN dedicate herself to the patient, but to best practice standards and procedures
  • As a professional identity, the nurse dedicates herself to her practice and her patients

  • Patients rely on life-saving care from medical professionals who are accountable and reliable
  • Nurse co-workers also depend on fellow nurses to practice with integrity and knowledge
