The Vietnam war

The Vietnam War

During WWII Japan conquered the French colony of Vietnam. French didn't like this and wanted to re-conquer it but Vietnam wanted to be independent. This caused a war between the French and Vietnam. This war went on for 9 years, till 1954. In 1954 the army of Vietnam (Viet Minh) and French signed a treaty. This treaty made sure that Vietnam was split into two sides. North was led by Ho Chi Minh and South was led by an anti-communist and pro-American.

A few years later Ho Chi started a campaign to take over South-Vietnam. To do this he established the Viet Cong. These are soldiers from the North that work in the South. The Viet Cong was very good at guerrilla warfare.

At first, the USA only supported the South but this changed when the Tonkin Incident in 1964 happened. During this incident, a North-Vietnamese submarine attacked an American Navy ship. Because of this America started Operation Rolling Thunder. This meant that they bombed strategic places. They did this from 1965 till 1968.

On March 1968 a frustration of the warfare arose. This frustration led to a huge disaster. The USA was told that people in a village in the North of Vietnam, My Lai, ere members of the Viet Cong. Because of this, the Captain of the American army told his soldiers to kill every single human in this city and to burn the city itself.

In America, there were protests to stop the war in Vietnam. The people that took part in these protests were mostly Hippies.

On 20th January 1973, the peace was signed. In these Paris Peace Accords, all parties agreed that the American army would leave Vietnam and that the country would be divided as agreed in 1954.

However, in 1975 the North Vietnamese army invaded South Vietnam and took over the government. And so Vietnam was now united and ruled by a communist government.

The napalm drop

There are many different stories told about the incident that happened on the 8th of June 1972. Many people say that the Americans did it on purpose. But the truth is that the Americans had nothing to do with this strike.

The planes that did the bombing near the village were VNAF (South Vietnam Air Force) and the people in it were Vietnamese pilots.

The incident took place on the second day of a three day battle between the two armies. (NVA & ARVN) The North Vietnamese Army (NVA) had occupied the village of Trang Bang and the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) were trying to force the NVA out. The fighters were meant to strike near the village so the could hit the fortifications of the NVA. But one of the pilots made a mistake and bombed on the village. And so the village was destroyed and the people had to leave

Picture 2

The highway picture is one of the most famous pictures from the Vietnam war. On this picture you can see children and adults running on the highway. they are running away from the village because it has been bombed.

The picture is so popular because of the naked girl, Kim Phuc, that is running away. The girl is naked because the napalm that has been dropped burned her clothes. The picture is made on June 8, 1972, by a Vietnamese photographer Nick Ut.

Phan Thj Kim Phuc (April 6, 1963) is a South-Vietnamese-born Canadian woman. Kim is also known as the nine-year-old child Napalm girl. She is world famous because of the well-known highway picture. On this picture you can see a nine-year-old Kim running naked on a road after being burned on her back by a south Vietnamese napalm attack. After the attack she had to go to a hospital for a month to recover from the burns.

When she came out of the hospital her self-esteem was very low because she thought she was ugly, due her scars. The scars she got were very painful and her life didn't go to well.

Picture 4

The photographer that made the well-known highway picture was the Vietnamese man Nick Ut. He made the picture because he thought it was weird that the girl was running naked.

After he took the picture he saw that the girl was covered in wounds and burns. He immediately pour a bucket full of water over the girl. And took her to his car and drove her to the hospital.

At first the doctors didn't want to help but when Nick showed the highway picture and told them that the picture would be all over the internet, they wanted to help the girl. the

After

After everything had happened her life wasn't a good as she hoped. She didn't think she would get a family or a nice life. But now, years later, she met a man who loved her. They started a family and her life was better then she could ever imagine.

In 1997 she established the first Kim Phuc Foundation in the U.S. The goal of this foundation was to provide medical and psychological assistance to child victims of war.
