Tomatoes originated from the Peru-Ecuador-Bolivia-Colombia-Chile region of the Andes (South America). The climate of this region was ideal for the wide range of tomatoes produced and cultivated.

The estimated time that tomatoes began to spread to the Iberian Peninsula is during the first half of the 16th century. The first documented discovery of tomatoes was by Hernando Cortez in 1519.

The European use of the fruit led to distribution into North Africa by way of the Mediterranean and across the Asian continent, reaching as far as Southeast Asia. Later, it was introduced to the North Americans as it traveled with the explorers.
