The Endeavour arrived in New Zealand on 8 October 1769. Maori thought this meant war while Pakeha thought it was a chance for land. They got what they wanted.
Maori thought that Pakeha were selfish and rude. They came and stole or bought land for really big prices. Maori wanted European goods. Pakeha had more power and people that helped them persuade the Maori into giving them more land.
Pakeha wanted the land that Maori owned. They had everything that Maori didn't have so it was very easy to trade things for land.
The Treaty Of Waitangi was first signed on the 6 February 1840. This resulted in the declaration of British sovereignty over New Zealand. The Maori treaty was translated incorrectly and Maori chiefs thought that they would still have control over their land and people.
Pakeha wanted land that Maori owned. This leaded to war. The wars continued from 1845 to 1872. British had soverienty over New Zealand after the treaty was signed.
