Music

Music Through the Years

I was wondering if you have music on your planet, and also if you know what music is. Music is sounds made by a human or an instrument that is not always intended to be a form of communication. Music can be singing, banging on a drum, blowing into a wooden or metal pipe, or dragging a stick with hair attached to it across a wooden box. Back in the day, when music had just been invented, people would bang on buckets and make noise to go along with it. But since then, music has changed a lot. In the 80s, when pop music was invented, bands like the Beatles came along, dressed up in wigs and costumes, and put on concerts for big crowds of paying audiences. Now, we have many more styles of music, like blues and country, but I'll tell you about that next. Also, do you have big musicians who make music for you, or do you all make your own music - if you even have music of course.

Styles

American Music

American music is normally played in The United States of America, which is in the middle of North America, which is where we are right now. Though it is mostly played in one country, there is a variety of different styles. A few of those styles are country, metal, punk, and hip-hop. Two of the more common styles of American music are hard rock, and pop music. Then, there are the calmer styles of music, like blues, gospel, and soul.

Just like the United States, the people in the United Kingdom, Canada and most of Europe, there is a deep love for several different types of music. Some of those styles are Punk, Hard Rock, Punk Rock, Jazz, Trip Hop, Grime, Britpop, Bhangra, Electric Folk, and Acid Jazz. Canada shares it's Southern border with the US, so some of the music in America seeps into Canada, causing there to be many styles of American music in Canada, and also a lot of Canadian music in the US.

Like Latin American music, African music is very upbeat and lively. African music is often made with drums and shakers. Two of the most common styles of African music, styles that most of us here in the US know about, are Salsa and Ragtime. Some other styles of African music are Kwaito, Afrobeat, Highlife, Soukous, Makossa, Mbaqanga Juju Music, Marabi, Kwela, Isicathamiya, Spiritual, and Mbube.

Latin American music is normally very upbeat and happy, unlike some styles of American music. Latin America is a little bit South of North America and a lot of the music is named after the many countries, like Colombia, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Costa Rica, Venezuela, El Salvador, and Nicaragua. These countries each have their own styles of music too, styles that make up the one style of music that is said to be their own. Some of these styles are Cumbia, Son Cubano, Bachata, Bolero, Merengue, Reggaeton, Dembow, Conjunto, Samba, Boogaloo, Latin Hip-Hop, Tropical, and Latin Ballad.

Pop Artists in 2018

Pop Artists

Some of the most famous Pop Artists of 2018 are Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, Pink, Katy Perry, Harry Styles, Keith Urban, Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, Adele, and Beyonce. These singers have all made their fortune by creating songs and performing them in front of large audiences. Most modern songs created by these artists are about love and other relationships. Sometimes, bands, which require more than one person, make songs that are mostly about a band member's relationship, but it isn't too obvious. Some of the most popular bands of 2018 are BTS, Imagine Dragons, The Chainsmokers, Maroon 5, Coldplay, Clean Bandit, One Direction, Fun, U2, and Portugal The Man.

Instruments Around the World

Instruments

Some countries can afford better equipment and more expensive instruments than others, which is why you wouldn't expert to find an Electric Guitar in Kenya or a Bongo in the US. I guess what I'm trying to say is that not all instruments around the world are the same. In Africa, drums make up pretty much all of their musical instruments. In North America however, there is a large quantity of electric instruments, woodwinds, and string instruments. Many other countries and continents though, have other styles of instruments. Instruments like the Alp Horn, coming from Switzerland, and the Pan Flute, coming originally from Asia.

Is it Hard to Play an Instrument or Sing?

Some people from our world think that it must be very hard to learn to play an instrument, or to learn to sing because you have to learn a lot of notes, but it really isn't. Learning an instrument is kind-of like learning how to count to ten, and learning to sing is even easier. And by the way, you do know that counting to ten is very easy right? To learn how to play a real instument, not a drum or an electrical instrument, you have to learn all of the fingerings which, on a string instrument, are where you place your fingers on the string. On most other instruments, there are keys or bowels that you press with your fingers to change the pitch of the note. There are very few instruments that don't use fingerings, but that's only a tiny fraction. Anyway, the only other thing you have to learn to do is to make a note, which you can then turn into other notes. That seems simple, right? Well, learning to sing is even easier. All you have to do is learn how to make different pitches with your voice and then, if you want to, put words to the notes. Just think of music as one of the easiest subjects in school, because that's really what it is.

Conclusion

I hope you think about bringing our styles of music with you, back to your planet. And if music doesn't already exist where you come from, I hope you bring what you learned here back to your friends at home and share the wonders of music with them, because music is really pretty great. And if you don't like what I just shared with you, that's okay, just consider telling it to someone else, someone who might appreciate it. Someone else who needs a little bit of music to brighten their smile. And if that's not you, their are a hundred other people in the world to give you other things to think about, but I'm done for today.
