Colorism In Puerto Rico

Date 1

Colorism Definition

Colorism is the prejudice or discrimination against individuals typically among people of the same ethnic or racial group.

Colorism

Historical Background

The subjectiveness of race and class have been formed due to slavery. Black people are frequently associated with poverty, slums, criminality, unemployment, etc. Many Puerto Ricans, especially those with darker skin, are quick to deny that racism exists among them while demeaning others who appear to be of African lineage. They consider lighter-skinned generations of children to be the sign of a successful existence. Even though the majority have varied degrees of African ancestry and the African presence permeates most aspects of their everyday lives, they are quick to rule out an African origin.

Social Affect

Social and Economic

"Approximately 202,817 dark-skinned individuals in Puerto Rico reported worse general health status than the 425,415 very light-skinned individuals who lived in the Puerto Rican Archipelago." Puerto Ricans who consider themselves as having lighter complexions benefit better than those who do so with the darker complexion tones when it comes to of health.

Economic Affect

Due to their skin color, the more darker skinned people happened to be poorer than their lighter counterparts. "The numbering system varied from one, which was very light, to six, which was very dark. According to the researchers, one significant way Puerto Ricans conceive race is based on skin tone. They also noted that this type of ranking had been proven to be a useful way for measuring discrimination and prejudice in Latin America."

Possible Solutions

- Make a law for it to be illegal to discriminate against any skin tone in Puerto Rico.
