Science as a Human Endeavor

BY KATY SCHINKEL

Renewable Resources

Non-renewable Resources

Both

Can be replenished within a human time scale

Cannot be replaced once they have been used or require a very long geologic periods of time to replenish

Renewable Resources Vendiagram

Renewable Resources

vs

Non Renewable Resources

  • Usable energy found in nature
  • Both have their advantages and Disadvantages
  • Low Carbon Emissions
  • More Costly
  • Can be replenished easily
  • prevents air and water pollution
  • prevents long-term negative effects
  • Higher Carbon Emissions
  • Lower cost Upfront
  • Can't be replenished/takes too long
  • contributes to global warming

How can we tell if a resource is renewable or non-renewable?

Identification of Renewable and Non-renewable resources

We can tell if a resource is renewable or non-renewable by checking how quickly it replenishes.

Renewable resources replenish reasonably quickly while non-renewable resources don't replenish or take a very long time.

How does coal cycle through the environment?

Movement of coal through the environment

The process of coal begins with plants. Once the plants die, they dont completely break down, though they still decay a bit. They are then buried by deeply sediments, which turns them into peat. Heat and pressure are applied for millions of years, which turns it into lignite. It is then pushed up to the crust where it is mined.

Supporting Diagram

Diagram explaining how coal is made and how it is turned into electricity:

Using coal to produce energy can lead to a variety of different issues such as pollution and global warming.

Scientists are constantly trying to find cheaper and more efficient ways of using renewable, sustainable energy resources such as solar power.

We can help by raising awareness of the affects of using non-renewable resources so that people can make better choices.

What are scientists doing to solve dependancy on coal?

Solving Dependency on Coal

Negative Impacts:

  • Raising cost of electricity bills
  • Limiting energy usage
  • Limiting access to energy

Impacts of resource management on society

How might resource management impact society?

Positive Impacts:

  • Doesn't contribute to global warming
  • Decreasing severity/occurrence of asthma and other lung diseases caused by breathing in unclean air
