How a Plastic Ruler is Made

By: Evan Kennedy

The Plastic

The Plastic

-Plastic which is mainly made of silicone extracted from crude oil.

-Crude oil is extracted from fossils.

Polymerization

Polymerization

Polymerization is the process of reacting small chemical units, called monomer molecules, together in a chemical reaction to form polymer chains or three-dimensional networks.

Polymerization is the process that gives us silicone from crude oil.

Melting

The plastic is heated to its melting point, which is just over 300 degrees celcius (about 575 degrees farenhiet).

Melting

Mold It!

The melted plastic is sent into a 13 by 1.5 by .1 (inches)mold.

Manufacturing

Refining

The ruler is then refined from the mold into a 12.5 by 1 by 0.0625 (inches) ruler

Refining

Selling

Rulers are shipped around the world by truck, airplane and ships, and sold to supply stores who sell them to us.
