Interpreting Emphasis
Summer 2017 Intern
For one credit of my internship, I have been interning at the USDB summer camps. I have been involved in many different camps with lots of different age groups ranging from 3-13. It has been very beneficial to work with all the different signing styles and age groups. I have also enjoyed the full exposure to sign language and using my hands everytime I attend the camps.
What is it like interning with USDB?
Everyday is a little different and the
schedule fluctuates depending on the
camp that I signed up for that week.
Usually I help out where I am
needed and help the students in what
they are working on. Often we go on
field trips with the kids and I have
found these days most benefical
because I'm getting more exposed to
actual interpreting.
As an intern, it is important for me to be as professional as possible. Not only am I representing myself for potential job opportunites in the future, but I am also representing UVU so I need to be as respectful and curtious as possible.
The goal for this internship was to make more connections in the deaf community as well as expose myself to different signing styles. I wanted to have more exposure to educational interpreting and figure out if this is a place I could see myself starting my career in.
I was able to observe educational interpreters in real life situations. I now have more of an understanding of the controls and demands that interpreters are exposed to and what situations I may be in during the future.
I was also able to make connections with USDB as well as other deaf people who have helped with my sign language skils overall.
Another part of my inernship was volunteering at the UTRID mini conference. I assisted with registration, passing out matirials, participating in the conference, and setting up/taking down.
My favorite part of this experience was sitting in during the conferences. I felt apart of the interpreting community and learned valuable skills that will help with my interpreting carear.
I was also grateful for the connections I made from this experience. I met interpreters in the community as well as socialized with interpreters i've met from my other internships.
In addition to helping with the conference, I was able to assist in helping with the UTRID Carnival. It was fun to interact and meet so many from the interpreting community. I feel as though all of my internships have been beneficial because I have been able to be more involved in the interpreting community.
