What is Social Facilitation?

Chapter 10: Social Facilitation
Social Facilitation indicates that people demonstrate increased performance when in groups.
This phenomenon Social Facilitation was first discovered in 1898 by Norman Triplett.
While watching bicycle races, Triplett noticed that cyclists were faster when they competed against other racers than when they raced alone against the clock (R. Biswas-Diener & E. Diener. 2017. p. 180).
In this video Clip from "IT" Pennywise (played by Bill Skarsgard) the clown attempts to attack the a group of friends.
Pennywise separates Eddie (played by Jack Dylan Grazer) from the remainder of the group. Towards the end of the clip Beverly (played by Sophia Lills) attacks the monster with a metal bar.
This group of friends shows an enhanced level of bravery due to being in in the presence of each other.

What is Conformity?
Chapter 16: Conformity
Conformity exist when people change parts of themselves such as interest, clothing, behaviors, etc. in order to fit in with those around them, often being their peers.
Solomn Asch conducted a study in 1956 where participants changed their answers to mimic other participants answers.
" . . . we often mimic the gestures, body posture, language, talking speed, and many other behaviors of the people we interact with" (R. Biswas-Diener & E. Diener. 2017. p. 303).

In this video clip from "She's All That" Laney Boggs (played by Rachael Leigh Cook) receives a makeover from Mackenzie Siler (played by Anna Paquin).
Mackenzie Siler changes Laney Boggs appearance to help her fit in better with her peers.
Mackenzie Siler is popular and fits in with her peers, while Laney Boggs is often picked on and called names.
