ABOUT
Improves cognitive abilities such as attention and reasoning by increasing working memory capacity.
What is working memory?
- A system for the temporary storage and manipulation of information, necessary for wide range of cognitive tasks.
- The ability to keep information in your mind for a short period of time (seconds) and to use the information in your thinking and respond to immediate demands.
When do we use working memory?
- Processes all stimuli we encounter
- Delegates it to the different parts of our brain that can take action
- Allows us to filter/block out necessary information/distraction
- It keeps us updated on what's happening - and keeps us focused on what matters
- We use it to read, solve problems, remember tasks/directions, items we need for tasks, to organise our thinking and to concentrate
Situations where we use WM
- When we remember PIN number, phone number, web address while we look for our pen.
- Following spoken direction to a destination while driving.
