Sri Lanka consists of Sinhaleses and Tamils, Sinhaleses make up about 74.9% of the population and Tamils make up 11.4%.
Sri Lanka had tension within the settlement of the two, with one being majorily Buddhist and the other being Hindu this cause some tension, but it was majorily because of the power disputes.
With the number of disputes, eventually Sri Lanka went to a civil war that some would even call a genocide due to the targetting towards a race, though others don't classify it as a genocide but an attrocity.
World War II, also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted
The tension grew more in 1948 when the British granted Ceyon their independence. It started with the Sinhalese creating laws to discriminate against Tamils, making Sinhalese the official langauge, and kicking the Tamils out of the civil service. The killing started in 1983 when ethnic riots began. The Tamil Tigers killed 13 Sinhalese soldiers, to which the Sinhalese killed around 2,500-3,000 Tamils. The Tamil Tigers demanded a war in 1983, wanting to be a seperate state in Northern Sri Lanka, they won and consolidated power over the separist movement in 1986.
The Prime Minister of India offered a settlement with the Sri Lanka government, but they were suspicious of it. Later on, they found that she was training Tamils secretly in camps. The relationship between Sri Lanka and India was ruined and over the years, violence escalated with suicide bombings, car bombs, suitcase bombs, and landmines. The Sri Lanka army responded by gathering Tamil children, tourtering them, and kidnapping them
In 1987, India sent peacekeepers to the Sri Lanka war. India was afraid of potential harm in it's own Tamil community and floods of Tamil refugees. It was the peacekeeper's job to disarm both militants and prepare for peace talks. The peacekeepers were not able to help the scenario, if anything, they had made it worse. The Tamils refused to make peace and began sendind bombers to the Indians, over 1,200 peacekeepers died. The year after this, Tamil had sent a suicide bomber to assisinate the prime minister of India in 1990.
When the peacekeepers withdrew, the war got even worse. It had begun when the Tamil Tigers killed 600-700 Sinhalese police officers on June 11th, 1990. This was an effort to weaken the Sinhalese Government. The police laid their weapons down and surrendered witht he promise that no harm was going ot happen to them, they then took the police officers to a forest, forced them to kneel, and shot them all. The Sri Lanka minister of defense announced that this meant all out war. The government stopped shipping medicine and food to them, the Tigers responded by killing hundreds of Sinhalese villiagers and Muslims. This caused the Muslim government to get very angry and kill many Tamils in their villiage, as well as Sinhalese school children. During July of 1991, 5,000 Tamil Tigers surrounded a governemts base, after 2,000 soilders on both sides had died they were not able to capture the key point, Jaffna.
In January of 1995, the Tamil Tigers signed a peace treaty with the new Government President, three months after this, they planted bombs on the gunboats, this overthrew the peace treaty. The president then declared a war of peace, which meant air force jets flying over and pounding Jaffna, with the refugee camps. whilst ground troops commited massacres elsewhere. 350,000 Tamil refugees fled, the Tamil Tigers did not like this, they launched an 8 day assault on the town, Mullaitivu, which was armed and protected by 1,400 troops. Even with air force support, it was overthrown by 4,000 guerrilla army in defensive tiger victory. More than 1,200 government soldiers were killed, the Tigers lost 332 troops.
The Tamil Tigers launched their first major attack after a year or so on the military, killing at least 12 Navy soldiers, to which a series of attacks followed. This cause the Sinhalese governemtn to overthrow them and declare vicotry against the Tiger Tamils.

Sri Lanka is still not in the best shape, children, women, and men are still afraid to exist there as Tamils, bombings still occur, and many are facing death penalties. Sri Lanka is also facing an economic crisis, as well as safety notices when traveling there. It is still to this day not a great place to go, or live. The official Canada website states that if you go, make sure youre sure that there is a high amount of caution.
