MAJOR DEPRESSION

Mental Disorder:

Depression

Major Depression

A mood disorder causing the inability to enjoy life and experience pleasure. The symptoms of major depression are constant, ranging from moderate to severe. Left untreated, major depression typically lasts for about six months. Some people experience just a single depressive episode in their lifetime, but more commonly it can becoming a recurring disorder. Mostly caused by something traumatic that happened to put you in a dark place. (Ex.) abusive drug or alcohol use, getting divorced, or even losing someone that you love.

Symptoms

  • Feelings of sadness, tearfulness, emptiness or hopelessness
  • Angry outbursts, irritability or frustration, even over small matters
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in most or all normal activities, such as sex, hobbies or sports
  • Sleep disturbances, including insomnia or sleeping too much
  • Tiredness and lack of energy, so even small tasks take extra effort
  • Reduced appetite and weight loss or increased cravings for food and weight gain
  • Anxiety, agitation or restlessness
  • Slowed thinking, speaking or body movements
  • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt, fixating on past failures or self-blame
  • Trouble thinking, concentrating, making decisions and remembering things
  • Frequent or recurrent thoughts of death, suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts or suicide
  • Unexplained physical problems, such as back pain or headaches

DSM - 5

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual outlines the following criterion to make a diagnosis of depression. The individual must be experiencing five or more symptoms during the same 2-week period

Criteria

(1) Depressed mood

(2) Loss of intrest/ Pleasure

(3) Weight loss or Gain

(4) Insomnia or Hypersomnia

(5) Psychomotor agitation or Retardation

(6) Fatigue

(7) Inapporatie guilt

(8) Decreased concentration

(9) Thoughts of Death/ Suicide

Behavior Includes:

The behaviors would be sad, and actually staying to yourself not coming out the room or eating & sleeping alot and not being very social as much basically just not being the normal you.

Types Of Treament

Therapy

Other thing to know there are many types of therapy for depression. Three of the more common methods used in depression treatment include cognitive behavioral therapy is a short-term form of behavioral treatment that helps people problem-solve. interpersonal therapy is an approach of improving depression by improving relationships. Also, psychodynamic therapy involves looking at how individuals respond to unconscious forces like defenses and conflict

Cases and Stats

The subject of the disorder was Mr. IR age 33 years, married, an MBA and was serving as manager in a government commercial bank. Mr. IR has one elder brother and an elder stepsister. He was referred to my clinic by an Ex-client. Mr. IR told me about the symptoms he was suffering from. These were; aggressive behavior, sadness, suicidal tendency, lack of interest in routine life matters, disillusionment about his sexual ability, disturbed sleep and at last a unique symptom that he kept sitting, talking and weeping in front of mirror for one or two hours once or twice in a week. He could not recall his actions afterwards which he used to play before mirror. Assessment made after taking semi-structured interviews from Mr.IR and his family. In light of assessment and DSM-IV, it was diagnosed that Mr. IR was suffering from Major Depressive Disorder

Statistics

The Mortality rate Number of suicide deaths 48,183 and Suicide deaths per 100,000 population: 14.5 .The Percent of adults aged witht depression are 18 and over with regular feelings of depression: 4.7%.MDD affects more than 21 million American adults or about 8.4% of the U.S. population age 18 and older in a given year.
