Multi Words Verb

Multi-word verbs, also known as phrasal verbs, are combinations of a verb and a preposition or adverb that create a new meaning.

They can be tricky for learners because their meanings often don't follow the literal meanings of the individual words.

Stayed on

- Continued to be in a place:

"I stayed on at the hotel for a few extra days."

- Continued to do something:

"I could have stayed on!"

- Remained in a particular position or state:

"The lights stayed on all night."

Look around

to examine a place or thing carefully, often in order to find something or get a better understanding of it

"You can look round the shops."

Eat out

to have a meal at a restaurant or other place outside of one's home.

"We'll eat out every night."

catch up with

1. To meet someone you haven't seen for a long time and talk about news:

"I need to catch up with my old friend from college."

2. To reach or overtake someone or something:

" I'll try to catch up with you later."

3. To become equal to something that has progressed faster:

"I need to catch up with my work."

Going back

- Returning to a previous location or state:

"I don't mind going back to the same place."

- Repeating a previous action or behavior:

"I'm going back to my old job."

- Referring to a time in the past:

"Going back to the 1990s, things were different."

Take time off

to be absent from work or other responsibilities for a period of time. It's often used to refer to vacations or breaks.

"I'm going to take time off next week."

Looking forward

feeling excited or anticipating something good that is going to happen in the future.

"I'm looking forward to seeing you again."

Ended up

to finally be in a particular situation, often unexpectedly.

"I ended up staying at her place."
