The first time I saw this picture I felt a very powerful feeling of terror. It came to my mind the idea that we have been totally seduced by a materialistic world in the name of progress. As the conception of my personal thoughts are placed in the ecological worldview, I reflected myself being the nature, that means, on the left side of the picture. Carrying all that beauty living inside and outside me but at the same time being touched by the persuasive sense of power and discovery. The author of the picture named it “Forbidden Love” which I do not like, because why nature and progress have to be independent one from another?

Matching this thought with the literature I understood that our minds have been dominated by an antiquated conception of the world whose inspirational force has been exhausted and it has had destructive effects since it appearance more than 300 years ago.

the still dominant conception of the world comes from the mechanistic thinking popularized by the philosophy of René Descartes and the rhetoric of Isaac Newton. Part of the basic concepts supports the strict separation of spirit and matter and conceives nature and men as machines. (Hirosige, 1976)

For one minute came to my mind the idea that the philosophy of Descartes and the physics of Newton were incarnations of the devil but giving it a second thought, I think is the contrary:

for centuries they have rendered great services, made possible the development of industry and technology, and were the basic argument of the Enlightenment against the dogmatism of the Church; a daring rational reaction to the exaggerated fear of the soul to God (Hiroste, 1976). All that, to the expense of the destruction of the environment. That is the part that personally conflicts me.

I matched my feelings about this image with the sadist Bacon’s conception about nature. He talks about it as a slave on which men must go on a hunt until they give up their secrets (Klein, 2016). When I contemplate the current plundering of nature, I think that modern politics and science have done nothing but follow Bacon's recommendations.

By contrast, my conception of the Ecological world view is based on the importance of every human as a part of collective consciousness where our lives are auto organized in dynamic systems. I understand this view as the deep and intimate connection and the reciprocal dependence of all the phenomena of the universe. What is called in the literature as a “Whole” (Hes & Du, 2015).

My relationship with nature has changed since I understand the reasons why the world is in this state of degradation. I past from loving nature, to be the nature. I see myself and humanity located in the whole of the world. I consider, however, that the change of consciousness towards the ecological vision of the world should not be a revolution, but an internal transformation that must be carried out in each individual and in the picture of society as a whole.

This transformation is underway and can be carried out without violence. I find that a new thought is being formed through contacts, relationships and collective actions of knowledge, and now we can see how this new vision (Ecological) starts to be palpable.

Some of my “take away” lessons are: The intelligence of nature has changed radically since Descartes and Newton. We cannot talk about nature as an inert matter. When we describe events of nature, we always speak of ourselves as observers. The discovery of this permanent reciprocal action between object and subject is new and revolutionary. Men are living systems as families and the built environments where we live, are.

“When I am surrounded by nature I just observe, I feel one with trees, plants and everything around me. I do not ask questions, I just enjoy, because, I am one with the whole, in its different forms of life. Because life is everything. In every kingdom, in every form, humans, animals, plants, earth, water, air, sun and stars. We are one with the universe, each of us are a fragment of it creating our own universe with our thoughts, feelings, actions and vibrations. To vibrate high is to have the confidence always that everything is fine in your individual world even when you see that the outside world is collapsing” by Herminia Sanchez (My mother). Translated from Spanish.

My mother told me this before coming to Australia, I always remember her words. She has that deep knowledge coming from our ancestors about our function in the Universe. A very ecologic worldview that she defines also as a whole. She gave me hope to thrive when I was passing through a hard time of depression. Those words affected my life in a very positive way, now my actions are led by this way of thinking. That will also help me for the design of our last project, a space where everyone can feel being one with their surroundings.

“Wind of change” by Scorpions. The song gives me the feeling of hope. I am sure we will get to the point where we all understand why we are one. The future is the present and the present is changing towards a movement of unity.

As the song says: “I can feel it everywhere blowing with the wind of change”...
