Sir Edward Dunlop was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1969. He most likely received this great honnor because he grew largely popular among the public, by supporting people making pension claims. He also grew famous because he took leadership rolls in Ex-POW (Prisoner Of War) organisations. After he got knighted he received many more awards and medals in his later life.

When Dunlop re-elisted for the army he didn't know that he would have work cut out for himself, after being promoted to major in Jerusalem.He traveled to Gaza where he was named deputy assistant director of medical services and in Gaza, Alexandria, Egypt. At campains in Grece and Crete he seved in a casualty claring unit, he then went to Tobruk where he became a senior surgeon. He was promoted to temporary lieutenant colonel in 1942 and given command to an allied general hospital at Bandung, Java. When the island fell to the Japanese he had a chance to escape but remained behind to treat his patients. Dunlop then became a POW and was transported to Singapore and then Thailand. He worked on the Bruma railway and was the cheif physician and commander of more than 1,000 POW's named Dunlops thousand.

What did Dunlop do to help soldiers?

Despite Dunlop serving on many fronts as a casualty clearing unit and as meadical personnel, notably one of his most famous actions was staying on the island of Java and tending to allied personnel. Dunlop was alsked if he wanted to leave the island before the japanese captured all of it but he refused this window of opportunity. After he was being held prisoner in Singapore and then being transfered to Thailand he was put incharge of 1,000 men nicknamed Dunlops thousand. Dunlop treated his patients as well as possible with no medicine and barely any food. Dunlop was forced to scavange for resorces, he made do with what he had and made fake legs out of Bamboo and an Antiseptic water saline out of bamboo, rubber tubing, and sawn-off beer bottles. Dunlop tried his very hardest to care for his patients and take care of their health.

Overall he seved on four fronts and gained the high rank of Lieutenant colonel and served as a sergion and casualty clearing unit.
