"Every student who comes through the classroom door is a three-dimensional human being like myself, and a person of infinite and incalculable value, someone to be treated with awe and respect, humility and patience, deep esteem and even reverence."
Create a list to read on your way to work every morning. A list that describes your personal goals in leaving an inspirational mark on your students.

"There is much talk about skills, but nothing about liberation. There are in-school seminars on classroom management and discipline, staff development workshops on lesson planning, but nothing on strategies to teach toward freedom."
William Ayers
Students are so much more than your daily lectures and quarterly assessments. As educators, we should strive to incorporate morals into our lessons. Teaching students how to to be free is just as important as teaching them core subjects.
"I hope you're aware by now that there is no simple technique or linear path that will take you to where you need to go, and then allow you to live out a settled teaching life, untroubled and finished. There is no promised land in teaching, just that aching, persistent tension between reality and possibility."
Educators should understand that teaching is not and never will be a linear concept. There are many different paths that branch out in different directions because of the diversity among students in classrooms.

Answered by Mrs. Heidi Colbrese
A 5th grade teacher at Matherville Elementary
What would be a list of 3 daily commitments that you would write for yourself?
Mrs. Colbrese's Answer:
1. Treat each student equally and for who they are as a person.
2. Teach them to be a good, unique, open-minded person.
3. Show them how to be a good citizen and help in their community.
Mrs. Colbrese's Answer:
I can write reminders in areas that I see everyday like my computer, car, or mirror at home. It's important to practice what you preach and show them firsthand too. I can reflect on each day's progress toward these goals.
What do you think a teacher's most meaningful commitment is?
Mrs. Colbrese's Answer:
Looking at children as human beings and realizing that their emotions and feelings are similar to your own. Treating them as equals.
