The Challenger Accident

On January 28 1986, the space shuttle, Challenger, was destroyed about 73 seconds after takeoff. All seven of the astronauts onboard were killed. NASA found out what happened and the O-ring seals used on the rocket boosters failed because of the unusually cold morning.

On May 4, 1989, Nasa started the Magellan mission to Venus after the launch of STS-30. It arrived at Venus in September 1990. It used radar and mapped 99 percent of the Venusian surface in HD.

The 80s was all about the space shuttles. Instead of switching from one flight program to another, the team started to develop a new spacecraft the would advance our capabilities in space: the space shuttle.
