Native American Georgia Tribes

The Guale

The Guale

Guale was the chiefdom of Native Americans who lived on the coasts of what is now Georgia and Florida.

In the late 17th and early 18th centuries, Guale society was almost completely wiped out by European disease epidemics and tribal wars.

The Guale were found by the French first in 1562 by French explorer Jean Ribault. When the Spaniards settled in Florida, they brought Guarez into the missionary system, which several times rebelled against Spanish rule. By the time James Oglethorpe founded the Province of Georgia in 1733, they had almost completely disappeared.

The Apalachee

Apalachee lived in the Florida Panhandle but also were bordering Georgia. The 16th century Hernando de Soto expedition encountered the Apalachee. They lived between the Aucilla and Ocrocony rivers at the beginning of Apalachee Bay.

They experienced severe population decline due to tribal wars, epidemics caused by European illnesses, and European invasion of tribal lands.

The survivors eventually merged with other groups such as the Creek.

The Creek

The Lower Mascogee Creek in southwestern Georgia is part of the Creek east of the Mississippi River. The Principal Chief (or Miko) is Bonnie McCormick and lives in a settlement in Whigham, Georgia. They were one of the tribes that resettled under the Indian Migration Act of 1825, and the law limiting the rights of the Creek people was not officially removed until 1980.

They sold the territory between Savannah and Ogeechee to England and became a number of powerful tribes. During the first century before they were dismissed, the tribes of the Creek lived in 50 cities and spoke six different languages. Some Spanish explorers have passed through their territory. Creek was a treaty ally of the South Carolina and Georgia colonies and was hostile to the Spaniards of Florida.
