Date: December 9th, 1954

Description: Supreme Court case ruled that racial segregation of children in public schools was unconstitutional.

Historical Importance: This ruling ended the legalization of racial segregation in schools. This overruled the separate but equal principle that was put into place in the 1890's.

Elementary & Secondary Education Act of 1965

Date: April 9th, 1965

Description: This act provided resources to students with disadvantages to help them recieve equal education.

Historical Importance: This act addressed the inequality of educational opportunities for underprivileged children.

PARC & Mills

Date: October 8th, 1971

Description: Is made up of two cases, Pennsylvania Assn. for Retarded Children v. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (PARC) and Mills v. Board of Education of District of Columbia. Both acts gave rights to disabled kids to have as normal of a public education as possible.

Historical Importance: Roughly 27 federal court cases followed these 2 cases which lead more pressure applied to the education system allowing education for all kids.

Description: Shortly after PARC and Mills millions of children were discovered to not be recieveing apporopriate education.

Historical Importance: According to the website provided, "legislation was introduced in Congress after several “landmark court cases establishing in law the right to education for all handicapped children.”

Description: All children with disabilities or handicaps have a right to education and that there must be a process that the State and educational agencies do to be held accountable.

Historical Importance: A sense of accounatbility to ensure that all students have access to education.

Date: December 3rd, 2004

Description: This became a federal law that individuals with disabilities from ages 3 to 21 have a right to education that meets their individual needs.

Historical Importance: This law not only garentee equal education, but also allows parents access to necessary services to prevent the hindering of their childs academic career.
