About Theatre in Education

What is Theatre in Education?

Theatre in Education or TIE, is an educational form of performance.

Theatre companies and groups could enter a school, college, university or even places such as care homes and create an immersive, interactive performance which usually educates on specific topics.

These Include;

About Theatre in Education

  • Bullying
  • Sexual Education
  • Car/ Road Safety
  • Self Confidence
  • Parenting Skills
  • Teamwork
  • Preparing for employment

An Example...

"The basic plan was that a group of actor-teachers (as the TiE facilitators were known) would devise scenes focussed on a teenager whose life was spiralling out of control. The audience, being the school students, would be invited to take on various roles, like a guidance councellor or concerned family member, and then asked to help the teenager cope with the situations that were presented.

There were other projects I can recall we devised on such themes as family violence and race relations as well as various social/ cultural issues that were the concern of the day. "

A Breif History...

A Breif History...

"In 1965, Belgrade Theatre, Coventry launched an idealistically cutting-edge theatre in education project. And it was, it seems, the birth of the movement."

Gordon Vallins, one of the original for teacher-actors who went out to schools, said "Im pretty certain it was the start of TiE generally. - We knew of no one anywhere doing anything remotly similar, but before long people who'd worked with us were setting up similar schemes everywhere and the movement grew rapidly."

Susan Elkin, The Stage

Gazebo Theatre Company

"Within 35 years of history, Gazebo Theatre is one of Britain's leading educational theatre companies contributing to equality and social change."

Gazebo Theatre Company

Gazebo, 2018

Who are they and what do they do?

Who are they and what do they do?

Gazebo are a company who, for almost 40 years, have visited a range of schools and performed and done workshops with thousands of children across the UK.

They cover topics such as;

  • Drug misuse
  • Bullying
  • Knife Crime
  • Discrimination
  • Exploitation

Techniques...

To encourage school students to solve problems and reach conclusions, Gazebo involve children and their teachers in their workshops.

These workshops and plays use techniques such as role play, games, improvisation and imagination.

Techniques...

"This is effective because it ensures individuals overcome barriers by being better informed and prepared when faced with similar real life situations"

Performances...

With the way Gazebo work, there are no specific performances that get presented to the schools. Most are improvised or modified differently depending on the students and their involvement within the work.

Gazebo do however tour professional theatres across the UK twice a year "Providing a powerful and cultural learning experience for audiences"

Big Wheel Theatre Company

“Big Wheel are fantastic to work with – very professional, flexible and friendly. We were really impressed with how they trialed the show with us initially, in order to incorporate our feedback and make the show specific to our campaign.”

Ruth Baker, Climate Change Campaign Officer, Somerset County Council

Who are they and what do they do?

Who are they and what do they do?

Big Wheel Theatre company was started in 1984 by a group of Oxford University students who performed fairly serious fringe theatre.

(BWTC, 2018)

Big Wheel Theatre Company not only presents workshops around UK based schools, but also travels to different countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Austria and parts of Germany.

Through these workshops, they specialise in a range of subjects for children such as;

They also specialise in subjects outside of the UK and workshops for adults. These include;

  • Shakespeare
  • English Language / Literature
  • World War 1
  • Healthcare
  • Air Pollution
  • Leadership Training
  • Presentation Skills
  • French

Techniques...

Each of the company's techniques differ depending on their audience.

For school and college workshops, Big Wheel uses games and exercises to help students interact and learn through acting and being involved.

Techniques...

Students may also be taught through short performance and acting, this is specifically used within their WW1 and air pollution workshops.

BWTC, 2018)

Universities and Adults...

For older students, Big Wheel still uses acting for their workshops, however, these performances include examples of a good and bad presentation to help students understand the do's and don'ts when public speaking.

Universities and Adults...

The workshops include breathing and voice exercises which are key when presenting, as nerves can cause someone to speak too quickly and run out of breath.

The comapny also works with teachers on the use of class handouts during a lesson and looks at the pros and cons of teachers using emails and social sites to interact with students.

Overall...

Overall this company has no specific performances which always start and end in the same way due to student participation.

This company mostly uses workshops so that younger students, older students and teachers are involved practically with the work.

Subjects and workshops...

Subjects and workshops...

One Day aims their work at primary school children and with that in mind, they have a wide range of subjects and topics to base their workshops on.

The image below displays a list of subjects which are available and then within each subject are a range of topics which teachers can choose from.

Some of these topics are then labelled as to what is popular among schools and what workshops are new. For example, this page on PSHE.

Performances...

"Our issue-based interactive theatre performances are the perfect choice for a ‘whole school’ approach. Ideal for special focus weeks (such as Anti-Bullying and Safer Internet Weeks) we can reach every child in the school in the space of just 1 or 2 hours. Our productions include full set, costume, animations and vibrant artistic design. Our performances are a unique blend of theatre and digital, and provide an innovative incentive to get your pupils thinking about current, PSHE topics and ways to observe and manage their experiences! "

Performances...

In comparison to the range of workshops One Day offers, they only have 5 performances which range from Shakespeare to Cyber Bullying and Mental Health.

Techniques...

As this company is aimed towards primary school children the acting is amimated with energetic characters which helps the children remember important information. They also include costume, colour and set both digital and physical.

Techniques...

During the workshops everyone can get involved and nothing is too serious.

Summery...

Overall, each company aims their performances and workshops based on any age.

The three companies we have chosen to look at are all diverse in their own way. Each are different due to their audience and the techniques that they use.

Summery...

From this, we have discovered that, to create a workshop, you need to think about who you are performing to and how you will capture the attention of particular age groups.
