Alexander Grahm Bell founds a school in Boston, Massachusetts for deaf mute and oral methods of education.
Galludet University was founded and was a school for the blind and deaf. The school was fedreally funded by President Abraham Lincon after signing the charter bill into law.
Thomas Galludet and Laurent Clerc opened the first Deaf school, The American School for the Deaf in Hartford, Connecticut. Their newly way of deaf communication, ASL, would be taught.
1974:
- Chuck Baird Graduates National Technical Institude for te deaf with a Bachelor of Fin Arts degree
1975:
- The Cochlear Implant became available for deaf people to get implanted
- Chuck Baird had his first major art exhibit at the World Federation of the Deaf Conference in Washincton DC.
1987:
- Marlee Matlin is awarded with an Academy Award for her role in the movie "Children of a Lesser God". She is officially the first Deaf person to become awrded with this.
March 6-13, 1988:
- The Deaf President Now Movement occured. Elisabeth Zinser (Hearing) was announced as the 7th president of Gallaudet University. This left the students and Deaf community infuriated. They gathered and began to protest. They believed a hearing person shouldn't represent them and said that hearing people brought them down.Students of Gallaudet locked all the gates to the school preventing staff from entering. This would force the school board to come and speak to the students. The students viewed this as an opportunity to present their 4 demands. The board declined these demands. However, Zinser expressed feelings towards the Deafs concern. She agreed to the 3rd and 4th demand, but she said she will not resign and wouldn't let Spilman resign. She said she wanted to learn and that she recognized the need to improve Gallaudet as a role model for all. The deaf said Gallaudet cannot be represented with a hearing president.The demands were finally recognized and Zinser resigned willingly because it was best for the community. A new deaf president, King Jordan, was selected. All 4 demands were accepted.
Deaf Rapper, Sean Forbes release his first album “Perfect Imperfection” which was geared towards both hearing and deaf audiences. The album included 12 ASL videos with Forbes vocalizing and signing the lyrics. . He is the founder of D-PAN, which is the Deaf Professional Arts Network. Through this, Forbes works with other artists to produce music videos in ASL (Parfitt). In 2013, Sean was awarded the Outstanding Hip-Hop artist of the year and the Detroit Music awards. He has performed in over 60 cities, and he has even performed with Stevie Wonder (Deming). Forbes has been featured on CNN and NPR. Sean Forbes is an incredible music artist and continues to inspire many people in both hearing and deaf communities with his work.
Thomas Galludet, an education advocate, was visiting his family in Hartford, Conneticut when he met a young deaf mute girl named Alice Cogswell. Galludet was determined to help her and by the request of her father, he traveled to Europe in search of education for the Deaf.

Gardiner Green Hubbard founds the first oral school for the deaf in Northhampton, Massachusetts. John Clarke makes a huge donation and helps open the school.
Alexander Grahm Bell invents the telephone.
1964:
- The first video relay service was invented by Robert Weitbrecht, a deaf scientist
- Hellen Keller was awarded with the Medal of Freedom
1965:
- The National Technical Institude for the Deaf (NTID) was created by the Congress in Rochester, New York.
Linguist had ignored any idea of ASL being an official language, but throughout time realized the emotion and complexity of it. In 1960 William Stokoe showed work proving that ASL had had linguistic structure and had grammar different from English. From there new research had been done further defining ASL as a bona fide language. ASL became recognized as an official language in the linguistic community in 1960. It would take another 20 years before William Stokoes work would finally reverse the common ASL misunderstandings.
The ADA stands for the Americans with Disabilities Act, which was establishes July 26th, 1990 and was built off the Civil Rights Act. President H.W Bush passed the act. It's purpose was to protect people with disabilities against discrimination. Charles D. "Chuck" Henderson is now the leader of the ADA.
William Ellsworth "Dummy" Hoy, was a Deaf American center fielder in Major League Baseball who played for several teams from 1888 to 1902. He set major records and career outputs while being a major inspiration to the Deaf community, teaching them that it's possible for Deaf people to adapt and make differences in the hearing world.
1979:
- The Southwest College for the Deaf was founded by Fred Maddux
1980:
- Chuck Baird joins the National Theater of the Deaf and spent his time there as an actor and set designer. He is most popular for his work in "King of Hearts". He is also one of themore notable founders of the De'VIA art movement, an aesthetic of Deaf Culture in which visual art conveys a Deaf world view.

While Thomas Galludet was in France with the Roayal Institudion studying deaf communications (French sign language), he became friends with one of his teachers, Laurent Clerc. Clerc was born hearing, but when he was young he was involved in an incident and became deaf. Galludet invited Clerc to return to Hartford with him to teach at his upcoming school for the Deaf.
