Fossa Physical and Behavioral Adaptations

Five Adaptations

Nocturnal

Retractable Claws

Long tail

Communicate through scent glands

Camouflage

First

Adaptation

Retractable Claws

Retractable claws is a physical adaptation. It helps the Fossa hunt for prey while climbing up and down trees. They also have flexiable ankle joints which helps them climb down trees head first. The nervous, skeletal, and muscular system all help the Fossa perform this adaptation.

Second

Adaptation

Nocturnal

Nocturnal is a behaviral adaptation. This helps the Fossa hunt better, but when food sources are scarce, they can hunt in the day time as well. They may be active during the day but Fossas are more likely to be awake in the night time. The nervous system helps the Fossa perform this adaptation. Also, the body structure used to perform this adaptation is the brain.

Third

Adaptation

Communicate through scent glands

Communication through scent glands is a behavoiral adaptation. Male and female Fossas ocupy territories that they scent mark with secretions from glands on their chests and under the base of their tails. Also, Fossas mark things to communicate and keep track of each other. They also release a bad smell from their glands when they are frightened or irritated. The endocrine system helps the Fossa perform this adaptation.

Fourth

Adaptation

Camouflage

Camouflage is a physical adaptation. This helps the Fossa blend itself into rocks, dirt, mud, and the bark of trees at night. It does this to hunt for lemurs and other prey through the tree tops. The internal and external structures help the Fossa perform this adaptation.

Fifth

Adaptation

Long Tail

The Fossa's long tail is a physical adaptation. The Fossa's tail comes in handy when hunting and moving along branches in the trees. The nervous system helps perform this adaptation.
