Haitian Revolution

How did lack of rights affect Haitian and what were the consequences they faced?

1789

French Revolution occurred. Some white slave owners, as well as Mulattos(mixed black and white people), seek to sever political ties with France.

Beginning of rebellion

Due to war, many people was killed and national infrastructures were destroyed.

~16th century

With money gained by pirating Spanish Galleons, French people begin to invest in Sugar Plantation.

January 1, 1804

Rebel forces declared independence.

Spain initially occupies St. Domingue(Then-Haiti), but soon be taken by France.

Inspired by the French Revolution, some slaves, whose leader was called Toussaint l'Overture, initiated rebellion.

1825

As French Government recognizes Haitian independence, Haiti became the first African American -run republic in the world.
