Jaina Dinino

Ball-and-Socket Joint

Type of Joint

  • Multiaxial
  • Some limited movement

Characteristics

Acetabular Labrum

  • A circular rim of fibrocartilage that enhances the acetabulum

The hip joint is able to carry out...

Movement

  • flexion
  • extension
  • abduction
  • adduction
  • lateral rotation
  • medial rotation

Muscles

Muscles

Types/Movement

Iliopsoas: helps flex the thigh

Rectus femoris: muscle of the quad that flexes the thigh at the hip

Sartorius: flexes, abducts, and laterally rotates thigh

Pectineus: adducts, flexes, and medially rotates thigh

Hamstrings: made of three muscles that extend the thigh

Gluteus maximus: extends thigh

Gluteus medius: abducts and medially rotates thigh

Gluteus minimus: abducts and medially rotates the thigh

Piriformis: rotates extended thigh laterally

Tensor fascia latae: flexes, abducts and medially rotates the thigh

Adductors: muscle mass consisting of three muscles that adduct, rotate, and flex the thigh

Types/Movement Cont

Gracilis: adducts thigh, flexes and medially rotates leg

Obturator externus: rotates extended thigh laterally

Obturator internus: rotates extended thigh laterally

Gemellus: rotates extended thigh laterally

Quadratus femoris: rotates thigh laterally and stabilizes hip joint

Tendons and Ligaments

Tendons and Ligaments

strong V-shaped anterior ligament

Iliofemoral ligament

Pubofemoral ligament

triangular thickening of the inferior part of the capsule

a spiraling posterior ligament

Ischiofemoral ligament

Ligament of the head of the femur: a flat intracapsular band that runs from the femur head to the lower lip of the acetabulum

Ligamentum teres

Injuries/Medical Conditions

Injuries/Medical Conditions

Dislocation

  • occurs when the ball at the head of the femur slips out of socet
  • causes severe pain and immobility of the leg

Disslocation

Labral Tear

  • damage to the cartilage surrounding the bony edge of the socket in the pelvis
  • can be the result of osteoarthritis, a fall, or overuse of the joint

Bursitis

Bursitis

  • The swelling and inflammation the bursae
  • Causes pain and aching in the hip and on the outside of the thigh
  • It is aggravated with walking or any activity that causes the tendon to move over the bone
