ALL THE LITTLE LIGHTS

By Jane Upton

PLOT

PLOT

'All The Little Lights' tells the story of three girls, Joanne, Lisa and Amy, as they get together to celebrate Lisa's birthday.

Over the course of the play, Lisa and Joanne reminisce about their old friendship, and discuss the memories they've shared. In doing so, they uncover the darker secrets, and discover the truth behind why they split up.

A light-hearted party turns sour as the girls unravel the nightmares hidden in the cracks of society.

CHARACTERS

Joanne

Joanne is a sixteen year old girl who's avoiding being placed back into foster care. She's aggressive, and seems to take little notice of rules. Throughout the play, she shows loyalty and a protective nature towards Lisa and Amy, however it is clear that she doesn't always go about this in the right way. In order to get Lisa to come to the party, she threatened to 'burn [her foster carer]'s face off with a bottle of acid'. Joanne is also seen to swear on almost every line of dialogue, and frequently discusses dark and inappropriate topics.

Lisa

Lisa is fifteen years old and lives in foster care. It's clear she's tried to close the door on her friendship with Joanne, and we learn towards the end of the play that this is because she believes Joanne betrayed her - however we discover that this was not the case, and Joanne actually saved her and put herself in danger by doing so. Lisa is polite and determined to live a normal life. Unlike Joanne, who seems to have given up on a bright future, Lisa has made plans to complete her GCSEs and go into nursing so she can help people.

Amy

Amy is thirteen years old and seems to idolize Joanne, who's been like a big sister to her since they met. She's innocent and naive, and isn't very bright. It's clear that Joanne finds her annoying at times, particularly because she never seems to stop talking. For a lot of the play, she almost appears to be seeking approval from Joanne, and she tries to get her attention a lot. Towards the end of the play, this ends badly for her as she tries to prove herself by doing a dare that Joanne had set her (thinking she wouldn't do it). When she learns that Amy did, she's furious and attacks her.

POSSIBLE

PRACTITIONERS

PRACTITIONER: STANISLAVSKI

If we were to choose this script, I think the best practitioner would be Stanislavski. It's a very naturalistic play, and focusses mostly on dialogue as opposed to movement, so would be hard to do in a non-naturalistic style. Using Stanislavski's techniques such as 'Magic If' and 'Given Circumstances' would be useful to get to know the characters more, as they all - particularly Lisa and Joanne - have dark backstories which would need to be communicated through our acting, as there isn't much detail about what exactly has happened to them in the dialogue.

In order to do it as a whole class, we would have to share roles. I think this could be possible if we found moments for a character to leave the stage so we can swap actors. Alternatively, I think it could also be possible to split the roles into multiple characters instead of just three.
