1. Me-"What went through your mind when you woke up and both of your parents had left?"

1. Sungju- "I was worried that something had possibly happened to them, but I was also scared because I was all by myself

2. Me- "How was your life in Pyongyang?'

2. Sungju- "It was nice. My family lived in a big apartment and we always had nice food because my father was in the military and I had a pet dog too.

3. Me- When did you start to figure out that you weren't on "vacation'' in the countryside?

3. Sungju- I started talking to some of my classmates in school and figured it out during my time in school.

We are introduced to the main character Sungju and his two parents. The family lives in a nice apartment in Pyongyang, North Korea, and the dad is a high-ranking military official. For a reason kept secert to Sunju, however, they have to leave and relocate to the countryside. Sungju's parents tell him they are ''taking a vacation''.

Rising Action

Now relocaed to the countryside, Sungju and his family get used to their new life. Their new house is much smaller and there is no AC or heater; the children at school are behiend in learning

While in school, Sungju and his classmates are forced to watch an execution. This is when he starts to realize that the life he knows may not be what it seems.

Due to a lack of food, Sungju's dad has to go to another town for a week to get food. Sungju's dad says he will be back in one week. On the fifth day, however, Sungju wakes up and his mom is not in the house. It is at this point in which Sungju realizes that both of his parents have left him. Sungju must now survive on his own...

With both parents gone, Sungju creates a street gang to survive with on the streets. Over the course of 3 years, the gang starts to fall apart and Sungju is back on his own.

Sungju creates a fake ID using one he finds on the ground on day and is able to sneak aboard an airplane to make his escape. He does not know where the plane is going to, however.

When Sungju gets off of the plane, one of the airport security guards asks to see his ID and passport. He finds them to be suspicious, so he pulls Sungju aside. After talking to the guard, Sungju learns that he is in South Korea. This is where he begins his new life.

Out of all the books I have read in the last year, I would recomend this one to someone looking for book reccomendations. I feel that this book would interest a greater audience of people than the other books I have read in the last year.

Review

Anyone who likes autobiographies or books that have to do with history would like this book.

I would rate this book an 8.5/10. It is an interesting book, but it is a little long. (500+ pages)
