Why Do Bears Hibernate?
Hibernation is when animals “sleep” through the winter. ... They hibernate to escape the cold and because food is scarce.

What is Hibernation?
Hibernation is a state of inactivity, in which an animal's heart rate, body temperature, and breathing rate are decreased in order to conserve energy through the cold months of winter.
Occasionally, seemingly miraculous cases of humans going in and out of hibernation-like states are reported. In 2006, for example, a 35-year-old man was rescued on a snowy mountainside in Japan 24 days after going missing. He seemed to have survived by entering a state of nearly suspended animation. Subsequently, the man made a full recovery.
During summer and autumn the Black bear gains as much weight as possible (up to 18 kilograms per week) in preparation for hibernation during the winter months.
During true hibernation, the animal’s body temperature drops to match the outside temperature, and their heart rate and rate of breathing slows down. During the bear’s dormant state or torpor, their heart rate is extremely low but their body temperature is relatively high, and they won’t eat or release bodily waste.
