After graduation, Menken's interest in musicals grew when he joined the Broadcast Music, Inc. He was mentored by famous composer, Lehman Engel.

During 1974-1978, Menken showcased various works, such as Midnight, Conversations with Pierre, and more.

Alan Irwin Menken was born on July 22, 1949, to Judith and Norman Menken. Judith Menken was an actress, dancer, and playwright. According to Alan Menken, Norman Menken was a

boogie-woogie piano-playing dentist.

Alan Menken had developed a love for music and began composing at an early age. At the age of nine, his original composition "Bouree" was described as excellent and brilliant.
