Perception

What role does perception play in this film?

Perception;

noun

-the ability to see, hear, or become aware of something through the senses.

-the state of being or process of becoming aware of something through the senses.

-a way of regarding, understanding, or interpreting something; a mental impression.

Spencer Gilpin

In the beginning,

we notice that Spencer's perception or outlook on life is quite dull. He is a bit of a geek, scrawny, jumpy and quirky with a very unpopular position in high school. He cannot even seem to gain the courage to tell his crush that he has feelings for her.

As we continue,

once Spencer is pulled into the game Jumanji and transformed into this muscular, fearless and strong Dr. Xander "Smolder" Bravestone his perception has changed as well as his courage.

How does the use of language differ between characters in the film?

Language;

noun

-the principal method of human communication, consisting of words used in a structured and conventional way and conveyed by speech, writing, or gesture

-a system of communication used by a particular country or community.

Differences

There are many language differences

among the characters of this movie. Some very distinct differences you are able to notice right away are the language interpretations between girls and boys. Meaning the way that females interact with other females, males with males, and then how they co-exist together. Throughout the film we are opened up to more language differences within each of the characters specifically. Spencer with his gamer knowledge, Fridge and Bethany with their social skills, along with Martha and her wits. Together they must work to first find the missing piece and save Jumanji.

-refers to gestures, facial expressions, tone of voice, eye contact (or lack thereof), body language, posture, and other ways people can communicate without using language.

Gestures

Gesture;

-a movement of part of the body, especially a hand or the head, to express an idea or meaning

Smolder, has an enticing gesture, it becomes intriguing.

Body Language;

-physical behaviors, as opposed to words, are used to express or convey the information. Such behavior includes facial expressions, body posture, gestures, eye movement, touch and the use of space.

Facial Expression/Body Language

We can tell by facial expressions and interactions which character gained which body

Tone

Tone;

-style or manner of expression in speaking or writing

From Fridge and Spencers' tone's you can sense quite the tension leading to a scuffle.

Gender/Culture

How do gender and culture play a role in this film?

Gender; Culture;

-the customs, arts, social institutions, and achievements of a particular nation, people, or other social group.

-either of the two sexes (male and female), especially when considered with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones

A very distinct gender switch occurs when Bethany Walker(female) is converted into Professor Shelly Oberon(male) when transformed into a video game.

Cultural differences occur continuously between the characters among the real world, those chose in the game as well as those encountered along the journey of Jumanji.

  • Spencers very separated - As Fridge is very integrated

  • Both males transformed males - Different builds/outlooks
  • Smolder with high confidence - Spencer as a shy nerd.
