Spain colonizing Philippens

Pre-Colonial History

  • Named the Philippines in honor of King Philip II of Spain.

  • las Islas Filipinas-the Philippine Islands

  • Population: 102 million The capital Manila.

  • Filipinos come from various ethnolinguistic groups. 175 ethnolinguistic groups, each with its own language, culture, and history.

Spanish

  • Many of these nations converted to Christianity.

  • The Negritos - ethnolinguistic groups. Earliest human beings to settle, 30,000 years ago and occupied several areas.

  • 14th century, Austronesian came in their boats and dominated and displaced the Negritos.

  • Spanish colonizers intermarried with the Filipino population. Only a few Filipino families use Spanish as a first language.

How they first arrived

  • Traders were in search for a new route to the Spice Islands, stumbled upon the Philippines.

  • Spanish Colonial Period (1521 to 1898) began with the arrival explorer Ferdinand Magellan, ended with the Spanish–American War.

  • The Philippines was a Spanish colony for 333 years.

  • Magellan sought alliances among the natives. Got involved in the political rivalries and took part in a Battle of Mactan . Magellan did not complete the voyage because he was killed in the battle.

  • Miguel López de Legazpi colonized all of Philippines,1564

  • Miguel Lopez sent his grandson, Juan de Salcedo to fight the Muslim pirates.

  • Martín de Goiti conquered Maynila.

  • Miguel Lopez then made Maynila the capital and shortened the spelling to Manila. Became the country's first governor-general.

  • The Spanish brought political unification and influenced the locals with western traditions and religion.

What resources they wanted

  • God- to spread the Roman Catholic religion.

  • Glory-to colonize as many land as possible.

  • Gold- to gain access to spices.During that time spices were in high demand and expensive so trading spices would be profitable.

  • Trade- The Spanish opened the Philippines for foreign trade.

Battles used to win control

  • Magellan made connections with the tribes and then took over. Groups resisted by refusing to pay Spanish taxes and rejecting Spanish excesses.

  • The Battle of Mactan. On 1521, Magellan invaded with 60 men and 1,000 Cebu warriors. Lapu-Lapu had an army of 1,500. Magellan seriously underestimated Lapu-Lapu , and were outnumbered, Magellan and 14 of his soldiers were killed.

End of Colonialism

  • The Battle of Manila Bay - 1898, at the same time as the Spanish-American war. The Spanish lost the battle of Manila bay.

  • The Filipinos signed the Philippines declaration of independence. This was not recognized by the United States or Spain.

  • Spain also lost the Spanish-American war, so the Philippines went under the control of the United States.

  • Marked the end of the Spanish colonial period in Philippine history.

1. The Philippines-American war began . Americans won the war because they captured Aguinaldo.

2. The Japanese invaded in 1941, ten hours after pearl harbor. The Americans were severely damaged. American General Douglas escaped the Philippines for Australia.

3. 1942 Japan controlled the Philippines. Japan used the Philippines for the ww2 .The Philippines suffered a great loss economically.

  • Religion: 86% Roman Catholic

  • Didn't treat them like slaves.

  • Currency: They use the Spanish's old currency .

  • Food: Spain Influenced Filipino food.

  • Spain made them unique from other Asian cultures.

  • Established the oldest University in Asia.

How Spain feels about the Philippines

  • Very few people in Spain would even have a recollection of it despite the fact that the Philippines was one of the oldest and richest colonies in the Spanish empire.

How Spain feels about the Philippines

  • Never had a close relationship between Spain and the Philippines.

  • Spain felt more damaged by losing the small island of Cuba than the whole Philippines.

  • There is not a large number of Filipinos in Spain.

  • The Philippines has an embassy in Madrid.

  • 115,362 Filipinos with dual citizenship.

  • 4,000 Spanish citizens living in the Philippines.
