Demographic Transition

Botswana

Norway

Norway is in stage 4 of the DTM. They are a very developed country, but have a positive rate of natural increase(0.2%). Norway has a TFR of 1.5, signaling that they are getting closer to stage 5.

Botswana is in stage 3 of the DTM. They are a lesser developed country, but have a relatively low rate of natural increase(1.2%) considering they are in Africa. Botswana has a TFR of 2.5, signaling that they have a growing polulation .

Population Pyramid

3

Norway

Botswana

After rapid population grwoth, fertility rates are starting to become more stable, and the population pyramid is flattening out on the sides. This is representative of a LDC in stage 3 of the DTM

There was a spike in population as shown by the middle of the pyramid. The fertility rates leveled out and the population growth became steady. This is representative of a country in stage 4 of the DTM

Migration

Botswana takes in 38,000 immigrants while 19,000 leave each year. This is a lower net migration rate than Norway, but still a positive number, signaling that Botswana is a developing nation.

Norway takes in 174,000 immigrants per year, while 5,000 emigrants leave each year. This is likely due to Norway's high standards of living and stable economy/government being large pull factors.

Culture

Religion and Language

Religion in Norway/Botswana

Norway

Religion

Norway is mostly Evangelical Lutheran while Botswana is mostly Muslim. Botswana has a history of Muslim traders bringing their religion to the area where it is widely practiced today. Norway however, has its Lutheran roots from the reformation period under Christian III

Botswana

Language

Language

Botswana's official language is English, but Tswana is spoken too. English is part of the Indo-European family, Germanic language branch, and part of the west germanic group.

Norway's official language is, obviously, Norwegian. Norwegian is part of the Indo-European family, Germanic language branch, and part of the Northern germanic group

Political Geography

Norway is an example of an elongated state. A positive result of this shape is easier transportation of goods to centers of business/industry. A negative result of this shape is poor communication because of distanced shape.

Botswana is an example of a compact state. A positive result of this shape is easier transportation of goods to centers of business/industry and easily defendable boundaries. A negative result of this shape could be a lack of resources.

Agriculture

7

Norway

Botswana

Livestoock production is the main product of agriculture in Botswana. According to the World Bank, Botswana, rural areas espcially, depends mostly on subsistance agriculture. Around 23% of Bostawanians are involved in agriculture, signaling that Botswana is a developing country. This number would be higher but crop agriculture is difficult in an area where droughts are frequent. These trends are representative of a LDC.

Norway produces mostly its own dairy, beef, and eggs. While Norway is mostly self sufficient in this field, they still are considered to practice commercial agriculture. Only 2% of Norwegians are invloved in agriculture, signaling that Norway is a highly developed and industrialized nation that has gone through the third agricultural revolution. Lower percentage of population involved in agriculture is certainly in line with a MDC.

Development and Industry

Norway is in stage 5 Of Rostow's Model. This is a result of high GDP per Capita and high standards of living. Norway is also a core country in Wallerstines world systesm theory, as they exploit smallere countries for natural resources.

8

Botswana is in stage 2-3 of Rostows Model, for there are more economic possibilities appearing, but only in urban areas, like the primate city/capital. Botswana is also a periphery country in Wallerstien's World Systems model because they are exploited for their raw materilas.

Urban Geography

9

-Primate or Rank Size?

-City Models

Norway-Rank Size Rule

Norway follows the Rank-Size Rule. The cities and their populations more closely follow the 1/nth rule.

European City Model

Norway follows the European City model in its largest city and capital, Oslo. Characteristics of this city include greenbelts to prevent sprawl, walkable cities, and housing programs

Botswana-Primate City

Botswana has a Primate city of Gaborone. This city has one large city that is more than double the size of the next city. It is also the capitaal city giving it politcal importance.

African City Model

Botswana is an African Country, so it likely follows the African City mmodel with three central business districts. Botswana was colonized by the British, so english language and a western, capitalist business center is most likely one of the three CBDs.

Current Events

10

Norway

NATO is a supranational organization. It is committed to the saftey and security of all allied members and, in light of reccent events in Russia and Ukraine, NATO has been under pressure to be ready to respond at any moment. Norway is one of the founding members of this alliance.

Botswana

Botswana, a periphery LDC, is being exploited for its resources by Western, MDC, Core countires. This is a real world example of wallerstiens world systems theory.
