Doves vs Hawks

Erin Neal

Opponents of the War

Doves opposed some aspect of the war such as fighting in Vietnam or the way the government was handling the war

Doves

  • Major opposition of the draft
  • Many students held protests against the war
  • Some opposed the war on moral grounds

The Draft

The draft was greatly opposed because people felt it was discriminating against poor and working-class families. This was because full time students, who were mostly middle class, received deferments and therefore were excused from the draft.

Eventually, Nixon changed the draft into a lottery system so that it was based off of age.

Student Protests

Many students held protests aginst American involvement in the war. An example of this is when students at Kent State burned down a military building. Later, when The National Guard had been sent to Kent State, students thre rocks at them yelling "we dont want your war." These uprisings caused the National Guard to open fire causing four student deaths and nine injured.

Morality of the War

Morality

Many peace movement leaders claimed the war was morally wrong for the Americans to be involved in. They argued that innocent Vietnamese civillians were being harmed, enviromental harm was being done from American planes, and young American soldiers were needlessly suffering. Innocent Vietnamese were being killed as American soldiers had been known to harm villages bruning supplies and killing civillians.

Supporters of the War

Hawks were people who supported American involvement in the war if for honoring of America or for helping Vietnam.

Hawks

  • Some believed America must fight to stop communists
  • People, also, wanted to show Americas support to Third World allies
  • Many wanted honor to America and felt withdrawal of troops would be seen as defeat

Stopping Communists

A big reason many Americans wanted to win in Vietnam was to stop Communism growing elsewhere. They felt if other countries saw America let Communism grow in Vietnam then those countries too would bring back communism which America was strongly against. Americans felt winning the war could succesfully scare other countires into keeping communism away.

Showing Support

Another reason Americans wanted to stay in the war was because they believed America should show Americas support to its allies in the Third World. People believed if America showed that they would defend its allies it would prevent future wars with other Third World countries.

"Peace with Honor"

A lot of Americans were not completely supporting the war but also didn't want Americas withdrawal from the war to be deen as defeat. President Nixon supported "Peace with Honor" and tried to help South Vietnam be able to fight against the North with out American troops. Nixon did this by training the Souths soldiers and gradually withdrawing troops from Vietnam. Nixon also tried having peace talks with the North to end the war.
