MECHANICS AND PROCESS OF SPEAKING

Resonation Stage

Resonation

The voice produced in phonation is weak. It becomes strong and rich only when amplified and modified by the human resonators. Resonation is the process of voice amplification and modification.

Speech is probably one of the most complex actions a human being can perform, requiring as it does the most precise mental and physical adjustments. Yet, we learn this remarkable skill at a very tender age.

Speech Mechanism

SPEECH PROCESS

  • Process which takes place in the speech mechanism when humans speak.

SPEECH PROCESS CONSIST OF:

  • Structure of Respiration

  • Structure of Phonation

  • Structure of Resonation

  • Structure of Articulation

Breathing

2 TYPES OF BREATHING:

Breathing, which is primarily concerned with maintaining life, is secondarily a force assisting in vocalization.

  • Essential physiologic elements in speech delivery.

  • It includes: respiratory system and oral cavity.
  • Psychological Breathing

  • Diaphragmatic Breathings

STRUCTURE OF RESPIRATION

  • The structure which is our power source to speak

  • The organs involved in respiration are the trachea, rib cage, thorax, abdomen, diaphragm, and lungs.

Vibrators : Vibration

Responsible for PHONATION as the Larynx opens & closes as it controls the pupping out of the air from the Breathing Apparatus.

Phonation

Phonation takes place when voice is produced in speaking as the expiratory air stream from the lungs goes up through the trachea or windpipe to the larynx.

Articulation Stage

Articulation

  • Responsible for creating different sounds of speech.

  • Organs that allow humans to articulate sounds to produce speech.

  • These organs are: soft palate, tongue, lips, teeth, alveolar ridge and jaw.

1. The point of articulation.

•This refers to an immovable or relatively immovable parts and that of a more movable parts as they approaches or comes into contact within an articulation.

2.The manner of articulation

•The articulatory phonetics which deals with how the speech organ works together. It is the configuration and interaction of the articulators when making a speech sounds.

ARTICULATORY SYSTEM

Process of Communication

Process of

Communication/Speaking

  • The process of communication refers to the transmission or passage of information or message from the sender through a selected channel to the receiver overcoming barriers that affect its pace.
  • Sender

  • Message

  • Encoding

  • Channel

  • Receiver

  • Decoding

  • Feedback

Speaking Process

-The speaking process includes activities that occur prior to, during, and after the actual speaking event.

Pre-Speaking: Planning and Organizing

Pre-speaking activities involve thought and reflection, and provide opportunities for people to plan and organize for speaking. Some purposes for pre-speaking are listed below:

  • listening to a speaker
  • jotting down ideas
  • reflecting upon personal experience.

Speaking: Going Public

-Speaking actively engages us in interactions with peers and other audiences. For those who have been provided with supportive, collaborative environments and opportunities to prepare for their informal and formal speaking experiences are more likely to have the confidence needed to "go public" with their ideas and information.

Post-speaking: A Time for Reflection and Setting Goals

-This type of reflective assessment and goal setting encourages critical thought.
