When we put food in our mouth, that's called ingestion. The large bits of food we take are broken down mechanically by our teeth (chomp chomp)
Saliva contains special enzymes that help digest starches and it makes food softer and easier to digest :D
Lets slide down the esophagus!
Ow... that was slippery! We've entered the stomach and we're floating in the different digestive juices. When food enters the stomach, its churned and mixes with the hydrochloric acid, mucus and other digestive juices. The juices break down proteins into smaller substances, and get emptied into the smaller intestine.
When food comes to the small intestine digestive juices from the liver and pancreas mix into it. The liver produces bile which breaks down fats. The pancreatic juice breaks down carbohydrates, protein and fats. Then, when the food reaches the lower part of the smaller intestine, intestinal juices complete digestion. Carbohydrates break down into sugar like glucose, fats into fatty acids and proteins into amino acids
Then the undigested food enters the large intestine. It absorbs water and some salts from it and then passes the remaining waste to the rectum. It remainses as semi-solid faeces. Then it is removed from the anus and this is called ejection
