It is from Bond Street that he writes to Marianne informing her that he had no intentions with her. It is fitting that a character such as Willoughby, who represents the materialism and greed of the gentry would be living at a location that feeds of the riches need for luxury.

In Sense and Sensibility, Mrs. Jennings is set on having Marianne and Elinor stay with her, but they compromise by allowing her to accompany them to Gray's shop on Sackville Street. This reveals the social pressures of the upper class in Austen's time. They are forced to interact with people they have no interest in for the sake of appearances.

In the novel, this is where Mrs. Jennings was shopping when she overhear two women talking of Willoughby's engagement to Ms. Grey. The way Mrs. Jennings describes the scene emphasizes the nature of gossip amongst the members of the upper class, as she hears two strangers talking about the engagement. Meanwhile the people who this information actually concerns are unaware. This scene reveals how social information was communicated throughout society in this time period.
