Hitlers Rise to Power

June 28, 1919

Treaty of Versailles

The Treaty of Versailles was signed by the Allies and Germany. It stated that Germany would pay for the damages caused by WW1. 132 Billion gold marks. It also reduced German land and millitary power. Hitler, along with many Germans believed those who signed it "Stabbed Germany in the back". Hitler blamed the loss of WW1 on Jews, Social Democrats and communists.

Nazi Party Created

The National Socialist German Workers Party was founded by Anton dexter. The group celebrated German pride while also holding anti-semetic beliefs. A year after its formation Adolf Hitler became the groups leader. This gave him politcal influence and a larger platform. Thus quickening his rise to power.

1922 - 1923

Post WW1 Hyperinflation

Due to the post war reparations, Germany ran into horrible financial problems across the entire country. It made being a German citizen very hard. It also weekened the government, and worsened indiviuals thoughts about the government. This made it easier to step in and claim he could solve every problem.

November 8, 1923 – November 9, 1923

Beerhall Putsch

The Beerhall Putsch was a failed overthrowing of the Weimar Republic curated by the Nazi Party. Hitler along with others led a group to attempt and seize control of the entire state. Due to this Hitler was then put into prison for 5 years. Though the trial only served to make him more well known by the German people.

July 18, 1925

Mien Kamph Published

Mein Kamph, or "My Struggle", was a politcal manifesto created by Adolf Hitler. In it he spews racist ideologies and plans his politcal future. It sold millions and millions of copies, which only served to make him more famous whilst also introducing his ideas to the German people.

October 28, 1929

American Stock Market Crash

The American stock market started to spiral downward very quickly and became a major factor in the Great Depression. The depression made Hitler becoming a politcal figure much more probable as many Germans just wated stability.

September 14, 1930

German Elections

As the Reichstag was dissolved, new elections took place in Germany. The Social Democrats won with 143. The Nazi's had the second most votes with 107. This was a very big deal as previously they were only able to get 12.

January 30, 1933

Hitler Named Chancellor

After talks and negotiation, President Hidenburg named Hitler Chancellor of Germany. Hitler then expanded security and police, very quickly turning Germany into a totalitarian regime.

February 27, 1933

Burning of the Reichstag

The Reichstag building was burned down by Marinus van der Lubbes. It's thought that this was planned out by the Nazi party. The Nazis ended up blaming communists and used the fire to stir up hate against their opponents. This only served to give the Nazis more politcial power.

March 22, 1899

Dachau Built

Soon after Hitler became Chancellor, Dachau, the first concentration camp was opened. It started out as a camp for politcal rivals or opposition. But as it evolved it became a death camp for those the Nazis hated. Later the prisoners were used to make weapons for the war.

March 23, 1933

Enabling Act

The Enabling Act was one that would effectivley give Hitler total power and control of the entire German government. While President Hidenburg was still in his position. This act made Hitler a dictator, reducing their power while his increased.

May 10, 1933

Book Burnings

Books determined to be "un-German" were burned by student groups all across Germany. Many of the books were writen by jews. This took away freedom of expression, speech and press from the German citizins.

July 14, 1933

Political Parties Outlawed

Hitler announced that the Nazi party would be the only politcal party leagally allowed in Germany. The meetings of and contuining of any other politcal parties would result in jail time. This fully cemented Hitler as a dictator.

June 30, 1934 – July 2, 1934

Night of the Long Knives

As Hitler belived the SA was becoming far too powerful. He comanded the SS to murder many politcal opponets as well as members of the SA. This included his best friend Ernst Rohm. Many other high ranking Nazi party members were killed awell. He feared anyone could become an enemy in the future. After this, Hitler's total power only grew more and more.

August 2, 1934

Hindenburg Dies

President Hindenburg died in his own home due to lung cancer. After this Hitler didn't have anyone in his way of achiving 100% power over Germany.

August 19, 1934

Hitler Named Fuher

Hitler made an announcment in which the positions of President and Chancellor will be merged with him at the center. German citizens then had a vote, with 89% of Germans voting for Hitler. He was offically in total control of everything German.

September 15, 1935

Nuremberg Laws

Racist and antisemetic laws passed by Hitler were titled The Nuremberg Laws. Jews would no longer be consitered German citizins. Jews and Germans were no longer able to marry. Along with others, these laws made being jewish in Nazi Germany hell.

August 1, 1936

Berlin Olympics

The 1936 olympics were held in Berlin too major outrage and politcal tensions. There were many boycotts and distain for these games. The Germans ended up winning the most medals. Although its notable that Jesse Owens and other African Americans helped in dismantling Hitlers ideas of Aryan domiance by winning 12 track and field gold metals.

Degenerate Art Exhibition

Degernerate art was that which didn't fit into Hitlers ideas of nazism. These works featured artists famous as Pablo Picasso. The goal was too show how modern art created by non-nazis were inferroir to those created by Nazis. A seperate exibit was opened with Nazi art too contrast the "degenerate art". Eventually many of these works were sold to finance the Nazis, while the rest were burned.

Nov 9, 1938 – Nov 10, 1938

Kristallnacht

The Night of Broken glass, or Novemember Progroms. Was a time period in which Nazis attacked many jews and jewish property. The name refers to the sheer amount of broken class that was on the street after this event. Synagouges, schools, buisnesses and hospitals were all looted and burned by Nazis.
