Read the text again and underline all the health-related consequences. How many are they?

Read the magazine editorial. What is this month's edition of the magazine about?

healthy diets and lifestyle

They’re everywhere, smiling down from billboards convincing us to buy, buy, buy... However, despite these famously slim models, statistics show that average weight has increased and our nation’s health is decreasing. Time we took responsibility? First, in this month’s edition, we look at diet, altered beyond recognition by fast food. Given our hectic lifestyles, it’s often more convenient to grab a burger and chips than prepare healthier alternatives. But high fat content can lead to heart disease and high blood pressure - aggravated further by extra salt added to preserve or enhance flavour. Then we move on to too much sugar - causing weight gain and tooth decay - and matters of hyperactivity, behavioural problems or allergies - especially in youngsters - provoked by chemical additives. There are also issues of vitamin deficiency and nutritional value – one Finnish company recently removed “meat” from its descriptions as the products contained too little meat!

The second half focuses on lifestyle habits. Insuffcient sleep can contribute to diabetes, heart failure and depression, while sedentary lifestyles and not enough physical exercise can bring on cardiovascular disease, increased anxiety and thrombosis. Of course, the risks of cancer, lung disease and strokes from smoking are now widely recognised, but there’s now increasing awareness of the risks of excessive sun exposure, including premature aging and skin cancer.

So check out the tips and advice in each section. It’s not too late to turn the tide ... if we start now!
