He attended elementary school in Kentucky, but he spent most of his time working on his parents' farm.
When he was 14 he dropped out of school. So his family hired a tutor to help him out. Later he moved to Ohio looking for work.

Morgan was the first Black man in Cleveland to own a car, he created a new kind of traffic signal, one with a warning light to alert drivers that they would need to stop, after witnessing an accident at an intersection in the city. Morgan worked to obtain patents for his traffic signal, a different version of the modern three-way traffic light. He later sold the rights for the traffic light to General Electric for $40,000.
In 1914, Garret Morgan invented the Morgan safety hood and smoke protector. On July 25, 1916, Garrett Morgan was in the news for using his gas mask to save 32 men trapped during an explosion in an underground tunnel 250 feet beneath Lake Erie.
Garrett Morgan was a trailblazer for African American inventors due to his patents. The patents include a hair straightening product, a breathing device, a revamped sewing machine and an improved traffic signal.
Morgan's sewing machine patent provided an opportunity for him to gain financial freedom: In 1909, Morgan was working with sewing machines in his newly opened shop ,a business he had opened with wife Mary, who had experience as a seamstress. When he came into contact with a woolen fabric that had been scorched by a sewing-machine needle. This allowed him to create the hair care products that changed his life for the better.
G arrett Morgan improved and saved countless lives worldwide. He saved the live of firefighters, soldiers and vehicle operators, with his profound inventions. His work continues to inspire inventors and creators today. HIs legacy will continue to live on for generations and generations to come.
