COMPARATIVES

When do we use the comparatives?

We use them to compare two nouns

RULES:

1.- TO SHORT ADJECTIVES WE NORMALLY ADD "ER"

FAST ----> FASTER ( My car is faster THAN your car)

TALL ----> TALLER ( I am taller THAN you)

SMALL---> SMALLER

RICH ----> RICHER

2.- IN MONOSYLLABIC ADJECTIVES AND ENDING IN CONSONANT, VOWEL AND CONSONANT WE MUST DUPLICATE THE LAST CONSONANT AND ADD "ER"

FAT----> FATTER

BIG ---> BIGGER

HOT---> HOTTER

3.- IF THE ADJECTIVE ENDS IN Y, WE HAVE TO REPLACE IT FOR I AND ADD "ER"

HAPPY ----> HAPPIER

HEAVY ----> HEAVIER

DRY -----> DRIER

4.- WHEN THE ADJECTIVE HAS MORE THAN TWO SYLLABLES WE HAVE TO ADD THE WORD "MORE" BEFORE THE ADJECTIVE.

EXPENSIVE ----> MORE EXPENSIVE

BEAUTIFUL ----> MORE BEAUTIFUL

INTERESTING -----> MORE INTERESTING

IRREGULAR ADJECTIVES COMPARATIVES:

GOOD ----> BETTER

BAD ------> WORSE

LITTLE ---> LESS

FAR -----> FARTHER/FURTHER

AFTER THE COMPARATIVES WE HAVE TO USE THE WORD "THAN" WHICH MEANS "QUE".

FOR INSTANCE: MY CAR IS FASTER THAN YOUR CAR.

WE CAN ALSO COMPARE ADVERBS.

IN THIS CASE WE ARE COMPARING TWO ACTIONS , NOT ADJECTIVES.

REGULAR ADVERBS.

QUICKLY -----> MORE QUICKLY

SLOWLY ------> MORE SLOWLY

IRREGULAR ADVERBS.

HARD ----> HARDER

WELL -----> BETTER

BADLY -----> WORSE

Ex: I WORK MORE QUICKLY THAN YOU.

COMPARATIVE AS --- AS

When we use this structure we are saying that something or someone is AS (ADJECTIVE/ADVERB) AS another noun. and we mustn't add anything to the adverb or adjective.

For example:

MY SON IS AS INTELLIGENT AS YOUR SON.

I DRIVE AS CAREFULLY AS YOU.

MY SON ISN'T AS INTELLIGENT AS YOUR SON
