“Minecraft” is a game that was created in 2009 by Swedish video game programmer, Markus Persson. Persson originally came up with the idea of “Minecraft” when he first saw a game called “Infiniminer,” which was an open-source multiplayer block-based building game. “Minecraft” took a lot of inspiration from “Infiniminer,” with both games being similar in aesthetic design and with the game being “open world”, free for the player to explore. Minecraft was first released in May 17th, 2009, with version “Classic 0.0.10a”. Minecraft was able to attract many users due to it’s “open-world” setting, with there being no real objective in the game. The game is considered to be an “open-world sandbox” game since the player is able to explore the world generated in Minecraft and can explore the many features and the interactive environment of the game. “Minecraft” was a hit, with surpassing 20,000 sales in 2010. With each update “Minecraft” receives, players are given new features to experiment with and integrate within their everyday play of the game. “Minecraft” remained attractive to players because every update made the game seem fresh, introducing aspects such as “crafting” and features such as “multiplayer mode” and “survival mode.” Minecraft’s success was able to branch out onto other ways for players to play, with a mobile edition (2011) and console edition (2012) being released, further contributing to the overall success of the game. Minecraft’s overall success was mainly due in part by the creator, Markus Persson, and his team being responsive to what the players wanted to see within the game. They kept in contact with many players using forums, integrating ideas from players, therefore, creating a very loyal player bases. The world of Minecraft has grown largely over the 10 years of its release. It started out as a simple open-world game to a massive game in which the only limit is the player’s imagination. Minecraft was dubbed the “Best Selling PC Game of All time” in September 20, 2014, and with the present day, having sold over 176 million units across all platforms. Minecraft has stood the test of time, remaining strong even after 10 years, and will continue to grow for years to come.
