Leadership
"Leadership is visionary; it is the projection of personality and character to inspire people to achieve the desired outcome. There is no prescription for leadership and no prescribed style of leader. Leadership is a combination of example, persuasion and compulsion dependent upon the situation. it should aim to transform and be underpinned by individual skills and an enabling philosophy. The successful leader is an individual who understands him/herself, the organisation, the environment in which they operate and the people that they are privileged to lead"

Q - What makes an effective leader?
"An effective leader is a person with passion for a cause that is larger than they are. Someone with a dream and a vision that will better society, or at least, some portion of it.
Also, without passion, a leader will not make the necessary courageous and difficult decisions and carry then into action.

What great leaders have you identified and why?
The possession of any particular set of attributes or characteristics does not guarantee success in leadership and no list is exhaustive. However, any organisation seeks a particular contribution from its leaders and the 9 leadership attributes outlines those required by the RAF. An understanding of the importance of each attribute, and the many things that stand behind them is necessary to achieve outstanding performance in leadership. Equally, this understanding needs to be underpinned by the ability to adopt a variety of leadership styles and approaches appropriate to the circumstances.

Take a short break
During the break investigate the leadership style you've been given and the example provided. Then when we regroup you will deliver back to the class your findings.
Situational leadership style
This adopts the theory there is no one prescribed method of leadership, its more a continuum of styles dependent on circumstance.

Transactional leadership style
Transactional leadership can transform civilians into productive Service people in the shortest time possible by providing high quality instruction and by imposing, and holding individuals answerable to, a regime of discipline. However, it does not change their inherent attitudes and values and it is necessary to continue to train, discipline and support them to maintain the new behavior.
Transformational leadership style
The transformational model of leadership is based on working with an individual's self image and creating an environment where self-discipline is actively supported and developed.
Being a good leader and being able to adapt your style to the situation is all very well but you are not only leaders as JNCO's, your managers also.
With this in mind there are several management functions that you will be required to undertake in your new role.
Activity - Discuss the following (one per table): Planning, Providing, Directing and Control. Use the laminated cards to form your discussion and prepare to deliver back to the class.
What great managers have you identified and why?
You're on Ops at Kandahar Airfield and the Unit has been hit by IDF. Within your AOR you have received notification that there is a casualty situation. You are the most senior person on the ground at this time. Your team has been in work for nearly 12 hrs and there are individuals that have been pestering you to let them go to the gym early or give them time to phone home. With regards Functional Approach to Leadership (FAL) how do you act and how does this impact FAL?
In your groups discuss, prepare to feedback to the group.
Roles and functions
In this session we have looked at some of the basic principles of leadership and management. To be here you would have displayed some level of leadership and management, it is now up to you to practice and develop these skills. This is an ongoing process that you should be doing throughout your Service career.
Having looked at a number of leadership styles, the question is... Which is the right one for you?
