In 1885 the Belgian King Leopold the Second established the Congo Free State as his own. He then used slave labor to collect many resources such as rubber, tantalum, gold, and copper. If these slaves did not get these resources or not meet the quotas, there would be consequences. An example of one of the consequences would be cutting of the hands and feet

In 1908 the Congo Free State passed from the King to the Belgian government. After that the colony renamed to the Belgian Congo which was later changed the Democratic Republic Of Congo as that is its name now.

In 1960 The Congo gained independence with Lumumba as Prime Minister in June. But this did not come easy because they had many things to overcome. Lumumba had used many different forces of military to fight Belgium and they even seemed after other different groups to help them. Eventually the CIA became involved and they were worried of the safety of Lumumba and wanted Mobutu in charge.

Mobutu took charge which the CIA wanted and he took charge in 1971. He then renames the country Zaire. Later on he was corrupt and did many things for a personal gain.

Mobutu got rid of foreign investment. This then caused a major economic drop. Later resulting in a failing infrastructure.

This was when the Rwandan genocide took place. Refugee camps in Zaire were flooded with citizens from Rwanda. The Hutus lived there and many wanted to blame this all on them. So the AFDL was set up to kill these Hutu refugees. The leader of the AFDL was Kabila and he became the president of the DRC

This was Africa's first world war.
After Kabila killed thousands of refugees everything started to fall apart in Congo. Later after the war ended Zaire was renamed the Democratic Republic of Congo

In 2003 the FARDC was established after the second Congo War. This was to show as a part of peace process.

IN 2010 The Dodd-Frank Act was passed that involved The Article 1502. This article stated that companies had to know and also tell other companies where their products were coming from. This act lowered the sale of conflict minerals. These minerals were so important and were called the conflict minerals due to them being the root of many wars.
