Disaster Recovery Policy

Identification of Critical Systems

Identification of Critical Systems

  • A critical system is one that is required for the business operations to continue causing significant damage to the business.

  • Your disaster recovery policy should identify the critical systems within the organisation.

  • For each critical system it should also identify:
  • RPO - the amount data that is acceptable in being lost after a disaster.
  • RTO - the acceptable time frame for the system to be recovered after a disaster.

Prevention, Response & Recovery Strategies

Prevention, Response & Recovery Strategies

  • This involves defining each of the following information for our critical systems:
  • People responsible
  • Facilities and equipment required
  • Data backup location and format
  • Network connectivity and bandwidth
  • Suppliers of equipment and people

  • In addition, we should define the recovery procedure (the actual process for recovering the systems) for each critical system.

Disaster Recovery Plan Structure

Disaster Recovery Plan Structure

  • There are many standards out there for the structure of a disaster recovery plan.

  • The most common two for this are:
  • ISO 27031 - a standard specifically for a technology disaster recovery process.
  • ISO 24762 - a standard providing guidance on choosing ICT disaster recovery services.

  • These standards can be summarised into the structure on the next slide.

Disaster Recovery Plan Structure

  • Introduction – the purpose of the disaster recovery plan & objectives to be achieved.

  • Roles and responsibilities – contact details of DR team & who will perform what tasks & when.

  • Incident response procedures – the initial actions to be taken in the event of a disaster.

  • Activating the disaster recovery plan – details on what must occur for activating the plan and how the DR team should be activated.

  • Procedures to be followed – the actual process to be followed by the DR team to perform the successful recovery.
