Dear reader,
When creating this mult-genre research project, Kendrick Lamar is the first person I thought embodies the topic, "Persuit of happiness," through his music. He is an Artist who can bring so many of his fans to a new way of music especially with his diverse use of production when rapping his ideas to the world. Throughout this project, you'll see many ways on how he does this and who inspired him along with how much he's inspired our generation.
Kendrick Lamar Duckworth is an American rapper/songwriter who was raised in Compton, California. He was born on June, 17 1987 and had experienced his whole childhood being surrounded by gang related activities due to his father. Kenny Lamar, kendricks father, had been invloved with a gang and Lamar's family had ties with the crips because of this. Ignoring his fathers gang invlovement, Kendrick focused a lot on his education and enjoyed writing stories, poems, and lyrics. While his father was gang related, his mother Paula Oliver did everything she could to take care of him by working full time at Mcdonalds.
Due to his young talent in writing and writing, music had always been an interest of his. When being eight years old, he had witnessed Comptons rappers, Tupac shakur and Dr Dre. filimg the music video to, "California Love," which was his most signifigant moment to his feel for the music world. Coming into his later years, Kendrick had taken the music idea really serious which had given him the stage name K-dot. He had released his first mixtape in 2010 and had eventually gotten signed by TDE(Top Dawg Entertainment) which boosted his popularity and would soon after release his debut album, "Section .80," beginning his first sign of fame.
Due to the success from Kendricks first album Section .80, he would later release new projects that would talk about his childhood along with growing up being surrounded by danger all the time. That was until he had released his 3rd album, "To pimp a Butterfly," which changed the way Kendrick had expressed his music production wise and lyrically. His previous albums, "Section .80," and, "good kid, m.A.A.d city," had given off a more gangsta vibe while his 3rd album had old, jazzy, and funk to his raps and a poem he gave at the end of each song which gave him even more recognition.
I remember you was conflicted
Misusing your influence
Sometimes I did the same
Abusing my power, full of resentment
Resentment that turned into a deep depression
Found myself screaming in the hotel room
I didn’t wanna self destruct
The evils of Lucy was all around me
So I went running for answers
Until I came home
But that didn’t stop survivor’s guilt
Going back and forth trying to convince myself the stripes I earned
Or maybe how A-1 my foundation was
But while my loved ones was fighting the continuous war back in the city, I was entering a new one
A war that was based on apartheid and discrimination
Made me wanna go back to the city and tell the homies what I learned
The word was respect
Just because you wore a different gang color than mine's
Doesn’t mean I can’t respect you as a black man
Forgetting all the pain and hurt we caused each other in these streets
If I respect you, we unify and stop the enemy from killing us
But I don’t know, I’m no mortal man, maybe I’m just another nigga
Throughout the album of, "To Pimp a Butterfly," this poem is said by Kendrick Lamar to sum up what he was talking about this whole album. Living in the rap world, Kendricks depression, and seeing and experiening so much hate within the black community is what is expressed through this powerful poem. Also, it turns out he was reading this poem to Tupac Shakur,so this shows that he can vent his poem to him because of how much he looks up to Tupac. Therefore, he knows expressing his views on the black community won't bring a change to its problems, but hopefully spark that idea just like Tupac wanted.
"It takes years, it takes wisdom to do the work that they had done, Mandela and Martin Luther King. But for this generation at the time being, I feel like I'm held responsible for these kids.
Kendrick doesn't like the fact of being compred to people such as MLK and Mandela, but since he has gotten himself into the rap game and now that he realeased this album expressing his views, there's nothing else to do but help and care for the people who are going through that struggle.
The Letter
Dear King Kendrick,
You've helped me so much in life man. In my opinion, you are doing Pac a favor by continuing this rap game and you're inspiring to so many others. You must have so many great things in life including money, fame, and such an amazing talent that no one can top which is why I perfer you the best of our generation. No one can top you King.
Sincerely, your greatest fan.
In this letter I made, I put it in the perespective of a clueless fanboy of Kendrick lamar. What the, "fan," is stating is what Kendrick doesn't want what his fans focusing on such as his money, his fame, and along with comparing him to iconic figure such as Tupac. He appreciates all good feedback from fans, but things such as things isn't what Kendrick specifically focuses on. Also the quote, "When shit hits the fan, is you still a fan," from Kendrick Lamar ties back to this letter because this fan expects so much from Kendrick, but when shit does hit the fan, will that fan still be his number one fan? Are they always going to see him as this icon or will it die out?

"The caterpillar has to suffer silently in a cocoon in order to become a butterfly."
The word cocoon and butterfly are terms that Kendrick likes to compare himself to. Kendrick sees himself living in a cocoon(The hood) who deals with these world problems especially living in compton. Although he did live through so much negativity, he has to go through these stages in life in order to see him become a butterfly and be released from that cocoon.
Icons such as Nelson Mandela, Michael Jackson, Tupac Shakur, and MLK is shown in the sky representing them being in heaven while Kendrick is on Earth continuing being as great as an icon as they were. The arrows all pointing towards kendrick is a way of ideas that have passed on to Kendrick and he spreads these ideas while they are in the sky.
Genre #1 The poem: This poem sums up everything he had talked about in his,"life changing," album and explains his ideas relate to the idea of a cocoon and caterpillar having those similiarities and differences.
Genre #2 The interview: Interview talks a lot about his ideals in his album that was made and the person asking him the question relates kendrick back to icons such as MJ, Mandela, and MLK. Kendrick feels as if he needs to help kids through his music.
Genre #3 The letter: This letter I wrote explains the mindest of those fans who doesn't understand what Kendrick cherishes in life. The, "fan" mentioning money and his fame and this goes to show fans such as these don't look at the message Kendrick gives in his music.
Genre #4 Haiku: This Haiku I made explains what Kendrick feels like living in the hood. Also, even when growing up experiencing so much negativity, he used that negativity to grow up into such a inspiring artist.
Genre #5 Visual: MJ, Mandela, MLK, and Tupac were big inspirations in Kendricks life which is why the arrows point back to him. This shows how far positive ideas can spread from generation to generation and how differently these people can express these ideas.
