Main Idea

The book "Blubber" is about bullying. It tells the story of a girl named Jill who goes along with the other kids in her fifth grade class when they decide to pick on, tease and torment a classmate named Linda.

Later in the book Jill realizes her actions are wrong and that the mean kids are not her true friends. However, it is too late and she becomes the next victim of the bullying.

Beginning

Beginning

In the beginning of the book, a girl named Linda reads her report about whales to her fifth grade class. As she is talking about blubber, the kids in her class pass around a note. By the end of Linda's report the whole class is making fun of her and calling her Blubber, because she is overweight. While almost the whole class picks on, teases and torments Linda, Wendy and Caroline are the main bullies. The main character and narrator of Blubber, a girl named Jill takes part in the bullying too. Some of the ways the girls bully Linda are: they force her to to strip in the bathroom, they make her say mean things about herself in front of the entire class, and they trip her on the bus. After one event, Linda finally fights back and threatens Jill but Jill laughs it off.

On Halloween, Jill and her best friend go trick or treating. That night they also play a prank on their mean neighbor Mr. Machinist. They crack and stuff rotten eggs in his mailbox. Mr. Machinist takes a photo of them running away from his house in their costumes. At first they get away with it despite the photo but later someone tells on them and they are punished.

Jill thinks Linda told on her and Tracy as payback for her bullying but Tracy thinks that Wendy and Caroline are the ones who ratted them out. When Wendy finds out that Tracy suspects her, she gets angry. Jill suggests they hold a trial to see if Linda is guilty of telling on her and Tracy and they lock Linda in the closet at school. Tracy advises her best friend Jill that she is scared of Wendy. Jill agrees that she has been scared of Wendy and just going along with the bullying to stay in the circle of friends.

End

End

Linda's trial falls apart when Wendy denies her a lawyer. Jill unlocks Linda from the closet and sets her free. Wendy tells Jill she will make her "sorry she was ever born".

When Linda comes to school the next day the entire class has turned on her and have now nicknamed her B.B., which is short for Baby Brenner. Even Linda, joins in on bullying Jill. Jill tries to laugh along with the jokes but it ony gets worse. Jill finally decides to play the girls against one another and asks them to start thinking on their own. Many of the friendships change. When the book ends the class is still divided. Jill is glad she can always count on her best friend Tracy.

Problem

The problem in "Blubber" is bullying. Almost Jill's entire class participates in bullying at some point in the book. Even the quiet girl Rochelle does not speak up. None of the characters in the story even feel bad for their actions.

Problem

Solution

Tracy is a true friend to Jill and calls her out for always going along with Wendy because Jill is scared of her. When Jill sees this, she stops and stands up to Wendy. Jill then becomes the target of the bullying but later begins to challenge and question the other girls for always going along. She asks them to stop and think for theirself. The girls begin to think freely and friendships change.

Ratings and Recommendations

I would rate this book a 7 out of 10 and recommend it to my peers. It is an important book for kids around our age to read because it shows just how awful bullying can be and teaches a lesson. However, some parts were hard to read because the bullying was so cruel and no one did anything about it. I wish the book would have shown that bullying has consequences for anyone that gets involved.
